A 240g in a garage?

Hi All,

I've recently purchase a beautiful 240g from a local reefer. It is my dream tank and I really love the design of the stand and canopy. Anyway, when bought it home, the wife jaw dropped and say it is way too big for our dining room. She told me no way the 240 is going in our dining room. BTW, the tank measurement is 8'x2'x2'. Man, why is it always the wife get in the way of our hobby.:mad2:

Anyway, here is my question. It is no way I want to get rid of this tank. I was wondering if I set it up in the garage, would I have a hard time dealing with the heat and everything else. Does anybody here have a big fish tank setup in their garage? Please chime in. Setting this dream tank in the garage is my last resort. What do I need to do to make this work? Please help......... Thanks.

What kind of lighting? I would definetly say find a spot in the house with the ac. If not in the dining room then some other room.

I have my entire set-up in my garage. The viewing side of my 180 display is in wall and viewable in the basement. It's a dream to maintain and work on. No worries about water falling on the floor etc etc etc etc.....The garage is now my favourite room in the house!!

As I've stated, the garage is my last resort. Please tell me what are the cons for having the tank in the garage if you don't think it'll work. Thanks.

Cut a hole, install ventilation or an AC. Get your couch, refrigerator and television/computer, invite your friends and you've got yourself a mans beerdrinking room. Keep it like that for a few months and then remove the tank upstairs to the living rook because the wife misses you like crazy and is okay with it........

Here's a pic of my garage.

That's a pretty good idea, robcampman. Unfortunately, cutting a hole is not an option. What about if I do a FOWLR tank?

Let's not insult eachothers dearly beloved's shall we..

There is no reason why you should stick to fowlr, Although you would need less lighting and that would be less heat build up in the garage.

just go build a stand, make a sump, het your equipment scavanged together and get the hobby started. Who knows were youll end up to!!!

Get some pictures of the most beautiful inwall's here at RC, and just accidentially drop them on the kitchen table. seeing is believing.

I have my 90 gallon set upm in the garage and I have no problems at all its cool in there from being on the lower level and its about 68 in the winter. No problems at all.

robcampman great ideas.

I know in florida where I live it is extremely hot. But all you need is some kind of AC down there. This can be real sweet in the garage. I am building a wall and t ing of my ac from one room to put another vent in my new room. Maybee you can take a vent from your house and run it to the garage. Or just blow a hole in the concrete wall for a wall unit. Just becarefull with electrical and plumbing. I would definetly put some insulation in the garage. On the rook and evan the door. It will all help.

This can be a sweet setup. Keep the pics coming.

Like rob said you never can know what can happen down the line.

My plans are half of the garage will be dedicated to my tank and the other's half for laundry and park a car. Do you think it will affect the tank if I have a car park in the garage?

I've thought of this myself a while back. Thought it would be a cool backsplash in the kitchen. BUT, My garage gets very hot in all seasons. My wife brings the car home and parks in the garage right away so the neighbor kids cant hit the car while playing ball. Yes I'm a clean car freak. Gave up that hobby because we both enjoy this one, can't afford both. Anyway..... I would think there is more chance of contamination because of the things we keep in the garage: eg. lawnmower and gas. lawn chemicals. garbage, cleaning supplies. I have enough of a time keeping my 60 cube in the house cool even in the winter. That is why I decided to finish the basement with an aquarium room. That was a few concerns. You may or may not keep as much stuff in you garage as I do so you may have other concerns. Everything else aside you could have free cold air in the winter to help with cooling ;)

Does anybody have their tank in the garage and have their car park in there? Would parking a car in the garage have any affect with the tank?

I'm in florida, i have a 220 + sump all in my garage and it SUX.
Since summer started, i have nothing but heat troubles.

if your interested in the buildout, see www.flickr.com/photos/davester1

See 210 buildout folder.

I dont know where in CA you are but hopefully its san diego or somewhere else that cool most of the time.

I am in the process of deciding to AC the garage, build a fish room, ventilate the heck out of the place etc.
