I'm in florida, i have a 220 + sump all in my garage and it SUX.
Since summer started, i have nothing but heat troubles.

if your interested in the buildout, see www.flickr.com/photos/davester1

See 210 buildout folder.

I dont know where in CA you are but hopefully its san diego or somewhere else that cool most of the time.

I am in the process of deciding to AC the garage, build a fish room, ventilate the heck out of the place etc.

Thanks for the link, Dave. Yeah, I definitely have some decision and planning to make. But building a fish room in the garage is probably not gonna happen. What are some good ventilation out there?

If all you would use your garage for is parking the car the major concern is heat. It is also possible to get other things leaching into the water from the running car. Most of the pollutants come out in greatest amount on startup.
And stuff happens, pull the car to far towards the front, opening the doors and such but if it was out of the way it would be free from bumping. Sound's like you are on the beginning stages of giving up on the idea.
If you build a closet like area where everything is all together, you could vent just that section if you have an outside wall. You could even cut a hole just large enough to put in a small air conditioner to keep everything cool. Climate controlled aquarium room that'd be sweet. Just a thought. Don't give up just think things through.

You don't have any where else in the house it can go. I have a 240 in our Great Room and it looks sweet. It is also 8'x2'x2'.
Living in Ca. I would think it could get pretty hot. Do you have away of putting in HVAC. I would want as much ventilation as you can get.
Show her pictures of them set up and maybe she will change her mind.

In Central Florida -- mid July -- garage temp (3 car) when we came in from work this afternoon.... (no windows either) -- 98 degrees! It is now almost 9pm eastern and it's 93!

Heck we're having heat issues INSIDE the house! LOL

How's Columbus, Ohio these days, CaveMan? I was originally from there and moved to SoCal in the mid's 80's. Man, I missed the great city of Columbus. GO BUCKEYES!!!

Actually, where I am at, it's pretty cool and I've been monitoring the temp in the garage these days and the highest it got to was about 89 degree. At night, it gets pretty cool. My only concern is ventilation. What do you mean by a HVAC? Do you have any link to that? Thanks.

Unless you convert you basically convert your garage into a room with insulation and AC, I wouldn't do it.

Cons:

Even with a good chiller, you will be at the mercy of the power company during a power failure. Your tank will get too hot during a long power outage.

Your tank will have spiders, moths, dirt, and dog hair in it.

Your garage will have more spider webs than a warehouse because of your tank lighting.

It won't be comfortable sitting in the garage and looking at the tank.

No privacy.

Concrete is an excellent ground, although the saltwater will eventually eat away at it.

I hope you like rust. I mean REALLY like rust.

Pros:

Your fish will learn to eat insects.

Spills are actually fun.

Silent house.

The pH won't drop.

Ventillation is a cinch.

No fumbling in a dark garage.

Thanks for all the info everybody. Had some long talk with my wife last night and we have come to a decision that she will let me have a 180g in the dining room. She says she can deal with the 180, because it's 2 ft shorter. I guess 180 in the dining room is alright.

Know I have a decision to make. Sell my beautiful 240 and buy a 180 or find a local reefer that wants an upgrade and make a trade. I think I perfer the trade. So, anybody out there that is looking for an upgrade and have 180 that would like to trade for a 240. Here's a pic of the 240 when the original owner had it setup.
This is one very beautiful tank and is in excellent condition. No scratches and looks like brand new.
