A Big No No?

I know I will get some greef for this, but after having the tank running for 3 days, I decided to buy 2 blue damsels, I have not purchased any live rock but plan on doing so tomorrow, I fed the damsels mysis shrimp tonight, the one loved it and the other has been breathing heavily for about an hour and didn't touch the food.....will the damsel that is breathing hard/not eating make it or will he more than likely die?

The reason I have not purchased any live rock yet is because the LFS will be getting a big shipment in tomorrow, the stuff they have now looks really nasty....

Its cruel to the fish to leave it in a tank that has not cycled.
That mysis you're feeding will break down to ammonia and burn your fish.

When I first started, I added live sand and rock thinking that it would instantly cycle my tank.
I still lost fish.

Won't any ammonia not just that from mysis shrimp burn the fish? Do you suggest I start with Live Rock, how long does the LR need to be in the tank before I can add fish? Will ammonia hurt anything on the LR?

LFS probably won't take damsels back....they are dumb like that....but I will try, for sure will get LR tomorrow would 10 pounds be too little, they want 12.50 a pound for cured bali LR

12.50/lb! Thats outrageous!

If the LFS doesn't take the damsels back your gonna have to do a lot of water changes to keep them alive. The cycle will take longer to happpen, but become less noticeable. Get some LR from somewhere else or something cheaper too.

Any self respecting LFS will take back livestock, especially damsels. If not, you need to find a new LFS. ;)

How much live rock? and Where is a good place to get it (internet wise)

under $4 a pound from foster and smith

etropicals.com

I am partial since they are local to me, but Drs Foster and Smith Live Aquaria are real good

the prices on LR are high unless you buy over 50 lbs. The price usually cuts down to 5 per pound once over 50.

Get some pretty purple rock, I made my mistake not getting great rock, not it is just old grey rock, nothing really purple.

At a minimum, just give him back to the LFS. I hate to see live specimens used for that purpose. Be patient and follow Drummerreef advice. depending on the live rock that you get it could take two - 6 weeks to completely cycle.
Live aquaria is a good source for liverock and you could get it next day delivery. I have set up three tanks with liverock from tem. The last batch i purchased was lalo rock and it was awesome.

I would never buy anthing from an LFS that didn't work with me. If they sold you the fish knowing you had not cycled the tank, they ought to take them back. Anything less would be unacceptable and I would let them know it all the way out of the shop. I can buy fish at more than 20 locations within 50 miles of where I live. I can buy anything online. With me, you either build a long term relationship or I take my money some where else.

The damsel that is breathing heavy is most likely not going to make it, if you do not get it out of that polluted tank. Ammonia and nitrite are highly toxic to fish and the heavy breathing/gasping is a pretty good indication that your water parameters are not even close enough to begin stocking with fish.

trust me don't say is "this much enough to start" because later when you add more your tank will cycle again and you'll fish like i just did. Get the 1 lb right off the start and then be worry free forever. Oh and find a new store. $12.50 a lb is cocain prices not live rock. I live in Canada (which is more expensive for live rock) and I usually pay from $6-$9 lb. There is no way your paying $12.50USD thats crazy
