so i went to my LFS today and i was planning on just looking when i came home with a Goniopora...i guess i should have done my research first! dang it! so i guess ijust have a couple questions...

i hear they are really hard to keep in capitvity? is taht true? and how hard are they?

i know they eat zooplanton but what else do they eat? do you target feed them?

what is the acclimation process?

and is P/C lighting enough?

i know i know soo many questions but the people at the LFS said it should be fine. but now that im doing research im kinda hitting myself in the head...ahhh please help!!!

I was in the exact same position a few weeks ago with my goniopora lobata. I was told Micro Vert, Micro Vert, and Micro Vert (Kent food). I use P/Cs and so far have been fine, but then again, it has only been 2 weeks. I was told that it will be okay though, just don't expect more than year out of it.

Mine started to open up after about 24 hours. Since then, it closes at night, and the polyps seem to extend farther and farther every day!

Just our of curiosity, how big is it and how much did it cost you?

ya i know i read that it can live up to 2 years or more..but dont expect much..i was pretty bummed..but ohh well...um..it is probably a little bigger then a soft ball and i was 34 bucks..what about you> ill get some pics to show you...it hasnt opened at all but then again its only been in my tank for about an hour...

here are a couple pics..sorry the first one is kinda blurry! but youll get the idea...put some pics of yours up if you can! thanks!!!

(about an hour after i put it in my tank!) does it look normal?

ya thats very true..but when it was fully open it was huge...so i thought 34 bucks was pretty good too..and plus i went in ther wanting something..lol...but then i got hom and did my research and now im pretty bummed..i hope it at least makes it the acclimation...i dont think i acclimated it very well either but who knows! if you said it takes 24 hours..i see a little bit of the polpys coming out but barley!

Here is just the goni lobata. It is much more pink and less brown in rl. I am a HORRIBLE photographer.

Hopefully it comes out within a day or two. If it didn't acclimate well, it may remain retracted for more than a month.

another question!! if it ends up dying will it kill anything in my tank?? is it like an anemone!!!?! im very worried now and i should have never got it..maybe ill take it back for store credit..lol...

Only if it contracts brown jelly and the brown jelly is allowed to spread to other corals; other than that, no, it doesn't poison everything when it dies. If it dies, you would want to take it out of the tank anyway. Goniopora usually don't suddenly die though. If it does, it is usually brown jelly that kills them and it is usually the way they are handled by people that causes the brown jelly in the first place.

Post another photo in a few days.
