really enjoyed reading the details and thoughts from start to finish of your tank hopefully i will get there soon

Thanks. It is not only my interest to share my experiences with everyone, but also a way to document the things I have tried, the things I have struggled with, and the things that have proved to be successful.

Good luck, and happy reefing!

A quick update.

Things have been quite stable for some time now, and I have found that growth has been a bit stagnant. I have noticed a decrease in my skimmer performance and also a more pale color in my corals as of late which I attribute to the very light feeding that is done since I have only 3 chromis and a wrasse in the tank. I believe my nutrient levels are just too low, and I am more or less starving my corals.

I am going to try increasing my feedings and target feeding some corals for a month or so and see how that works out. My next step would be to start adding a couple of supplements that may help a bit with pigmentation and growth - those being amino acids and Lugol's Solution. I'll select a few corals and try tokeep a log with before and after pictures along the way to see how effective this dosing really is. Should be interesting.

First off....beautiful tank....second off I agree about the lack of nutrients in your water. You might consider buying a few more fish and target feeding. If you increase your bioload then you wouldn't have to target feed as much.

I totally agree. I'm in the process of getting new fish, but since I had an ich outbreak I'm getting my Elos Mini up and going to transfer the remaining 4 fish that survived out of the DT. Once the DT has had some time without fish and I'm sure the ich is gone, then I'll restock. The tank certainly did look better with a dozen more fish in it :(

That tank is looking sweet. I really love that light. Can't wait to order mine once I get everything else worked out. How often are u cleaning the sandbed...it's soo clean

I don't clean the sandbed :)

Maybe once in a while if I can visually see that the sandbed is starting to solidify I'll poke the end of my long handled aglae scraper in it to break up chunks and maybe give it a little stir. I wouldn't even think that I do this as often as every couple months, but it is pretty superficial anyways. I don't siphon or vacuum it either.

Here are a few updated shots from the past 6 weeks. I've been traveling again so the tank has been just a bit neglected. While I was away I had an outbreak of montipora eating nudibranches, which wiped out my large colony of the red monti cap that I had. That in addition to a couple other things which haven't been going particularly well (starving my corals) resulted in me throwing some stuff out and re-aquascaping the tank yet again. My goal this time was to consolidate space and build things up around the large toadstool that otherwise dominates the look of the tank in my opinion.

Here are the new shots, and with just one more week of travel planned this summer I should be able to get back into working on getting the color back on my SPS.

Well, two weeks and counting now since I re-stocked the tank with fish. I've had my Vortech's off for the most part while acclimating the fish, and also to protect the small ones from getting sucked against them. I think the peaceful atmosphere makes it less stressful for the new additions to adjust, and all of them seem to be doing well. I'm also hopeful that the increased feedings for the larger fish population will help the corals to start coloring back up.

Great tank.
How is it doing now.
I have a few questions, as all references on the glass-holes.com site are about tanks with a rim. How far down from the rim did you place the overflow box.
What is the distance from the top of the rimless tank to the top of your bulkhead hole? What is your water line based on this.

Thanks
I am going to be using it on a 120cmX60cmX55cm rimless tank

The tank is doing well, not much has changed. I'm finding the need to keep moving things around a little bit because the toadstool is getting so big and I'm finding the sweet spots for certain corals under the T5s.

Regarding the overflow, I had the center of the hole drilled at 4 1/2" down from the top. My waterline is typically an 1 1/8" below the edge with the 700gph kit. If I had to do it again I probably would have went a 1/4" to a 1/2" lower to make it 4 3/4" down on the hole location and bring the waterline down just a tad more.
