A Customdusty Rimless Build

I previously had 4 Koralia 4's on their Deluxe 4 way wavemaker, and I just couldn't get enough flow out of those to prevent dead areas from accumulating detritus. I do have to admit that the programming and control on the wavemaker was really sweet, and the Vortechs just don't cut it from a programming standpoint for me. The upside was that the Vortech not only has the high, broad flow, but that the undertow it creates literally pulls stuff out from crevices, holes in rocks, etc... places where direct flow can't go without placing a crazy number of powerheads to target them. All in all, I replaced what would have probably required 5 or 6 powerheads with 2. And no cords and ugly junk in the tank, which I feel was critical in the minimilistic, rimless approach I had.

i saw that you are using the room under your stairs for a sump area, what are you doing for ventilation.

I'm not doing anything special for ventilation at this point. I'm not overly concerned with CO2 right now, the open top tank should do well enough for gas exchange, especially with the surface agitation from the Vortechs. I will however need to monitor the humidity to see if it becomes a problem.

Update on my kalk reactor and the siphoning problem; I contacted Geo and described the problem I was having and they seemed to believe that I just have a faulty check valve. They are sending me a few replacement check valves free of charge. Hopefully that does the trick, otherwise I will be looking for a dosing pump. Props to Geo for the great service.

Well I wanted to share another thing that may not qualify as a problem, but is definately an opportunity for improvement... I've been a big fan of Rio HyperFlow pumps in the past - they are cheap, they move tons of water, they don't give off much if any heat, and they are lower in wattage than every other comparable pump (Mag drive, GenX, etc.). Their one major flaw has been that the operate with a fair amount of noise, which I have attributed to vibration - and herein lies the issue. My return line plumbing is all hard plumbed with schedule 40 PVC, and is mounted to the walls inside my "fish closet". The vibration from the Rio pump is resulting in a lot of vibration in the return lines, and since they are mounted to the walls, it is causing vibration in the walls. Enough that since the return plumbing is on the underside of my stairs, you can feel it through your feet and hear a low, but audible hum. I ended up using a 2 foot section of vinyl tubing that connects directly from the pump to the mounted PVC line in hopes that it would absorb and reduce some of the vibration, but it did not improve things much if at all. I've also tried loosening the mounting brackets on the PVC and tyring both foam, towels, and felt tabs in between the pipe and the wall, but again, none of this resolved the issue.

Rather than continuing a trial and error approach to quiet the noise and vibration, I think I will now focus my attention on the root cause of my annoyance, which is the inherent quality of the return pump. I think it might be better to replace this pump with something of a higher quality that does not cause issues like this. I'm open for suggestions, but based on my layout right now, I'm going to continue to be limited to submersible pumps.

I've heard that the Eheim 1262 is by far the best submersible pump for the money, but I can't really comment on the noise level. If you want an external pump Sequence Snapper is hands down the best. Large amount of water, low wattage, and dead silent.

I consdidered the Eheim, but it only does just under 900 gph, I need like 1,500-1,800.

I feed both my DT and Frag tank with this pump, and each has their own overflow at about 600gph. I've also got 6, 90 degree elbows in the plumbing, so some additonal head loss there.

I just can't do an external, there is no place for it without starting the whole "fish closet" over again.

Two Eheims then? Thats starting to get a little expensive, but having two pumps for redundancy is very cool.

Well the two pumps wouldn't be for reduncy, just either the frag tank would run or the DT would run. I don't think you can put two pumps on a single line can you? Anyways, for that kind of money I'm getting into Red Dragon territory.

Some good news, and some bad news.

The good news ist hat I finally came across the deal I was looking for for lighting for my frag tank, I found a guy on CL selling both a used 150w and 70w Viper K2 with upgraded electronic ballasts at a great price.

The bad news is that he absolutely refused to ship either of them. I couldn't tell if he was really that lazy, or just going overboard with his phobia of internet scammers.

Here are a couple of shots now after my first aquascape. I've got a lot of stuff to add still, so it will fill in nicely.

I was wondering, if you have your sump in the closet, do you need to have some sort of ventilation? I was thinking of possibly doing that as well, but thought I might need to vent it. By the way, you're set up is beautiful! Very classy looking. Sorry, I see you already addressed this issue. Have you noticed any type of problems with not having ventilation?

Thanks everybody.

I'm trying to sell off some of my old LR, corals, and equipment that I didn't want to bring over in the transfer from my old tank and it's taking a lot longer than I had expected. This is preventing me from really finishing my sump layout and the "fish closet". Once I get the stuff cleared out, I will be able to share some pictures in there and show how that is organized.

In regards to ventilation, I've not noticed any problems - although I'm monitoring the effects of humidity. I don't want to have any run ins with mold or oxidation. Even as it is, the closet is a recieving closet for coats and such, so the door is typically opened several times per day and I could also just leave it open while I'm not at the house. I think for now I'm ok, but I'm worried about what might happen in the summertime when it is hot.
