A few 200DD plumbing questions

I'm going to run a BeanAnimal style overflow with the full siphon and open channel in one overflow and the emergency drain and return in the second overflow. All of my equipment has to fit in the stand and the sump will be in the front of the stand for easy access, so I'd like to have the horizontal runs of plumbing as close to the top of the stand as possible. I will use some sort of hangers to relieve any pressure on the bulkheads.

1) Should I use slip X slip or slip X thread bulkheads?
2) Could I use a 90* elbow right after the bulkheads (under the tank) and then a union? Or should I plan on union then 90*?

Having the plumbing as close to the top of the stand is very important for me b/c the monterey stands don't provide for much room and a remote equipment room just isn't an option for me.
