A few of my recent DIY projects. Canopy; Deck; and Trees

So when the weather got nice a month or so ago it inspired me! I made a canopy finally. I could not bring my self to pay $300 for a small one and upwards of $700+ on a nice one. So i built one.
It took me about 4 hours one day to make it. An hour to put on the crown molding and the time to paint it. I need to take it off sand it down and put a final coat of paint on. I LOVE IT, and so does my wife. She said if i built one i could buy on of the Golden torches from ABC a month or so ago with the money we'd save on building. Here it is.
Simple with two doors on the front.

Then a week later we were gonna buy a new grill but have no nice even/level place to put it so i built a deck. It took me about 4 days, a couple hours each day. Now i gotta wait for it to dry out a few months so i can stain it. Nothing to dark. I plan on each year doing a section until it wraps around the house. It is 13'6"x12' so far. I am going to add railings later in the summer. It needs a few touch ups still but here it is.

And finally at the end of summer/mid fall last year we planted some thuja giants. They are a hybrid arborvitae that grow 3-5 foot a year once established. Deer, bug, drought, freeze resistant. I planted them in front of my house and they have grown a foot or so in their first 6 months!! I cant wait till their fully grown. We hope within 5 yrs you cant see our house from the road!!!
Stupid me measured wrong and i need 3 more. So i think im going to try to propagate them myself. Ive read they are one of the easier ones to do that so well see. It hard to justify buying 3 more with the shipping costs. Buts thats just me being my cheap self :-)
Just wanted to share some of my DIY projects with everyone.
Enjoy, and i hope ive inspired someone else to do something!

Thanks! Yup I might end up adding on to the deck more this year. Well see how everything goes. on top of this we own a duplex in Albion that I fixed up the one side after the last tenant moved out, and now its rented out again. It's been a busy year so far. But yup, now I have all summer to enjoy it!!

nice goin!

Lookin' good. I have some of those Thuja Giants. Planted some Douglas Fir and Blue Spruce a couple of years ago, too. It's surprising how fast they grow. The reef aquarium is pretty nice, too.

thanks and yeah i did not know what to expect with them as far as growth but wow do they grow fast! The canopy really make the tank stand out and have a lot cleaner look to it!

Flanders- that tree was here when we moved in 4+ yrs ago and and i've swore every year to my wife that come winter its gonna fall over with the weight of the snow but still it stands, or teaters.... Its big too, id say it a 40ft tree give or take. Its kinda of neat, like im in another universe or something. It still grows at an angle too and not straight up which i think is weird. When it gets windy that tree really gets moving

Very nice. What is that slanted tree in your yard?

That's a firewood tree ;)

Hey, rjmayes, do you happen to know a guy named Mike Pantano? He lives in Kent, I used to work with him. Kent's a pretty small town I imagine.
