Background:
I have a 200 gallon in wall tank with a 80ish gallon sump outside my house (living in southern california makes this feasible) all controlled by an apex. On one side of the tank is my living room and on the other is a spare bedroom that is basically my "fish" room. I didn't actually purchase this tank or set it up for that matter, but that is a different story documented here. Bottom line, after moving in almost six months ago, I'm all about it.
Want:
I've been thinking about the feasibility of this for a wile and would like to see if others have done something similar. I want to use a spare ten gallon tank on my desk in the fish room as a small zoa grow out tank. I also have invested enough in the DT with dosers, apex, GFO, biopellets etc that I want to leverage that system and it's water. Not interested in monitoring two tanks or doing frequent manual water changes.
Problem:
I have no way of installing an overflow and flowing the water back into the sump.
Idea:
Setup a pump in the DT (make it pretty hidden ofcourse) and almost setup an automatic water change of sorts. It would look something like this
-Every hour the drain pump from the frag tank pumps ~3 gallons of water from the frag tank to the DT,
-Then the pump in the DT pumps water until the float valve in the frag tank tells it to stop
-ATO and skimmer in main sump will not be active during this water change
-there will be additional powerheads in the frag tank as well as a heater
So, should work, right?
