A Fuse! A Fuse! My Reef tank for a fuse!

Mako Shark II

Fish are Friends not Food
Okay, I was inspired by Shakespeare:

King Richard:
A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!
:deadhorse:

Catesby:
Withdraw, my lord; I'll help you to a horse.

King Richard:
Slave! I have set my life upon a cast,
And I will stand the hazard of the die.

Here's the deal...
I came home from the LFS, which I hadn't been to in like...forever, oddly enough "King Richard's" and the Play on words in this thread is killin' me! (Now, that's funny right there, I don't care who ya' are!)

Anyways, it's about 9PM and I go to put the supplies away that I bought earlier this evening, so I go to my Sump closet and as I'm leaving I happen to glance down at my Chiller and the controller face is completely blank.

Hmmm. That's strange.....

WHAATTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!
OMG! (This has never happened!)

I check the outlets and everything else is working fine and I'm pluggged in. (Expletitive deleted)

Okay, so it's gotta be a Fuse, right?

Sure as hell, I locate the fuse holder, directly adjacent the main power cord to my 1/3 HP Current Prime Chiller Tower and I pop out this itty-bitty 1/2" long older-automotive style, cylindrical fuse. PHEW!

No problem.

I break out the shop vac and clean out the (dryer lint) from the chiller's filter. Fast diagnosis, noooo problem, I think. Right? (WRONG!)

I grab my keys, wallet, blown fuse and I'm off to Autozone. (Who doesn't carry, a 250VAC, 20Amp Bussman style fuse. (Expletive deleted.)

Fine.

I'm off to Home Depot. They don't have it either.
(Expletive deleted.)

Then Lowe's.
(Expletive deleted, thank you Jason!)

Then Wally World.
(Expletive deleted.)

...and (Expletive deleted) now Radio Shack is closed.

ALL I NEED IS A STUPID LITTLE FUSE!!!!!!

So now, the canopy is 1/2 off (Read: fully open). The canopy fans are blowing across the water's surface. The ceiling fan is blowing down on to the open water. The house A/C is set at 78 and the tank's MH lights are "Off" and I'm screwed without a (Expletive deleted!) Temperature Controller (because it's integral to the Chiller.)

All because of a stupid little fuse, that nobody carries off-the-shelf.

Thanks Current!

Yeah, yeah... They're on my list for TOMORROW.

(But thank you! It's the right idea. I already thought of them.) Truth be told, I used to sell the Bussman product line (along with 150 others) to the Airlines, so I even (my employer at the time) likely had it in stock! I think that's what makes this even more Ironic!

I got half a mind to break out the little 50-watt heater I keep in my Salt Vat for pre-heating my (Water Change) water. It'll be at least 20-hours before I'm back home.

well it sounds like your story has a happy ending, unlike King Richard.......but he didn't have a Grainger's right around the corner (I am sure they would have stocked spare horses back then.....he would have been happy to pay retail).....

Not so fast Sparky!

Not so fast Sparky!

Err... ah... well... maybe not quite yet.

I'm back to blowing fuses (but not Circuit Breakers...)

:worried:

I'm going to have to physically remove the Chiller (just shoot me now, I buried it!) and clean out it's coils.

It's GOTTA be just dirty, right?? (Tats! Are ya' out there son??)

Is it a fuse that it tied to the thermostat or the fan? If it is to the thermostat the temp sensor maybe cracked and allowing wanter to seep into the element and causing a direct short if it is to the fan (the motor tha drives the fan) could be a couple of things the brushes could be worn or you have a winding on the motor that has come loose and is shorting out to the stator or even worse did you notice it making any noises like a bearing squeeling / sweeking the tail shaft bearing could have started to fail and the rotor has shifted and is intermittantly touching the stator. On an easy note it could be just dirty and overheating the unit. If you need help shooting wires or anything let me know.
