A General Guide to Salt Mixes

I am one who just referenced it and this is where I am left?

I'm not sure I understand. It is a huge amount of work to test all different salt mixes the exact same way and to keep it constantly updated. No matter how often it is done, a change might take place.

But overall, the info still seems pretty good.

Is there anyway to update the first page of the first post (in the original thread). A lot of people still reference this and it's a couple years old now. I recently found myself totally hosed when I bought a box of Red Sea Coral Pro looking for something with a Low DKH, and it turns out they recently changed the forumla... I was excepting 7-7.5dkh ended with 16!!! I know i'm no the only one the keeps referencing this thread, but at this point no information is better then mis-information.
I hope this clears it up a little better. LOL. But this is what I was referring to.

Well, most of the information is pretty good, and it isn't likely to be updated any time soon unless someone volunteers the time and money.

That said, I think it likely that 16 dKH is not a formulation change but more likely an inhomogenous batch, an off batch, or inaccurate testing.

Where are the results located?

Where are the results located?

I haven't looked at the results in so long...I forgot where they are located. Can anyone tell me where the testing results are posted? Is there a sticky somewhere?

Thanks,
-Chris

I don't like dumping salt in my 30 gal. How do you do it without hurting all critters? Does it hurt them? I'm talking bumping 1.022 to 1.025. 6-7 tbl.

You don't (or I guess I should say that 99.9% of reefers) dump salt directly into your tank or sump. Mix it with RO/DI water to get the desired salinity. Then add that water to your tank.

If you want to raise the salinity of your tank, do it gradually. The easiest way is to top off your tank with saltwater of the desired salinity instead of using freshwater. Then once you achieve the desired salinity, go back to topping of with fresh.

Wow, I just read this whole thread, splits and all from cover to cover!!

And, I'm swapping from Seachem Aquavitro Salinity to IO... Salinity is ok, seems to be consistent. But it clouds my tank for a while after, leaves lots of dirties in the mixing container, doesn't store well and is stupid expensive. I have a daily water change setup and the Salinity salt smells funky after about 2 weeks so I mix it every weekend. Looking forward to only mixing monthly with IO.

I also just picked up a calcium reactor setup and figured that was going to replace and maintain all my elements so well that starting with higher values would lose it's draw that it has to me with 2 part dosing.

So, time to start saving some money and using IO!! I have about 250 gallons of water volume and I change ~25 gallons a week. I'm swapping cold turkey at the same time I swap to my calcium reactor from my dosing set up. Any suggestions or reasons I shouldn't do this?

Greetings Randy.
I have been reading alot of your thoughts over the past few days regarding
ICH, TTM and such... now I am having salt issues that has lots of cloudyness.

is there any info on mix quality? my HT looks like a snow storm

where is a good place to start with most current info?

thanks so much for helping us save our swimmers!!!

I spot at least one problem with this list. Red Sea Coral Pro is listed as having an alkalinity of 7dKH. Every mix I have ever tested with this salt comes in at over 12dKH, agreeing with the manufacturer's stated 12.2-12.7dKH for S=35. Has the list got out of order?

Peter

I'm quite confident the list is correct with numbers as measured at the time, but manufacturers may change their recipes without notice, and some manufacturers may release some buckets that do not totally match their intended specifications. :)

Many mixes might have cloudiness. I'd turn off the stirring and just let it settle. Then use the clear liquid.

The only way to keep completely up to date with salt issues is to read current threads on them. :)
