Wow i need alittle help here.Im getting back into the scene after a 6 year break from the lifestyle err hobbie.Heres where i need help.Tomarrow in going to get a great deal on alot of live rock and aragonite sand. Its been alittle mistreated for what i can tell so i guess im going to have to cycle it.Right now i have most of my equipment except nothing i mean nothing is setup. No water or salt nada. Can this be done and whats the minimum setup for recuring liverock.I thought id goto puritan to get my ro water for my ro setup im sure is in need of atleast a new membrane. As for lights ive got a 250watt mh setup or a 96 watt pc (bulbs are prolly shot though but they still work). My main tanks are 2 54gal corner setup on a stand to resemble a 108 half circle. At least their reef ready.Thought id eventually run 1 on ats and the other with a refuge and skimmer.Time to break back out the old euroreef.Kalkwasser drip ie auto topoff via perastaltic pump using a diy stirrer.I sold my refractometer so i guess i will be using a hygrometer. As for a return pump ive got a panworld but do i really need that kind of flow to cure the rock.Hmm guess i will since its the only pump i have and prolly should use my skimmer while its cycling.Sorry for the short story but gotta cover alot of ground quickly any input is greatly appriacated (kinda rusty since its been 6 years) Thanks Ken

You might want to take a piece of that rock and put it in a bucket of new saltwater (let the water mix over night at least)

And then test for phosphate after 24 hours.

If the rock is releasing phosphate it may be better to find other rock.

Even if this rock is free, if it's going to cause you problems, don't go down that road.

Why start off with someone else's mess?

after 3 years of reefkeeping i often find that i still dont know squat. LOL. I was under the impression that phosphates either come in from unproperly filtered water or either formed as a by product of something else. i have never had them show up after all this time in my tank untill recently and even now its just barely showing. i did not know live rock could "soak up" the phosphates!
