The last year or so my reefkeeping skills have allowed me to keep parameters consistent and actually keep healthy acros. Your corals are beautiful. I'm ready to plunge into higher end acros, but I don't have a quarantine tank. Meticulous inspection and prescribed acclimation and dipping is all I do. Do you believe this is adequate considering your flat worm condition? I'm in Huntington Beach, so I'm close enough for "œlocal pickup "œ. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

I had the same problem with Bayer in my quarantine tank

I dip every coral and go as far as cutting the base off if coral not coming from a very trusted source.

Sucks right? You think you have everything covered and are doing your due diligence and something sneaks by eventually.

I remove from the base and dip religiously -- I didn't know AEFW could survive bayer until it was too late. Thankfully it was spotted very early.

Agreed.

A small note on that -- I dip in Bayer, always have. It's effective against everything except AEFW. I ended up with some mild AEFW, and tested bayer side by side with melafix -- Melafix killed the AEFW, Bayer didn't in a dip that lasted 3x longer than the melafix dip.

So even if you're dipping religiously, if you KNOW the coral has AEFW, or if you're just worried about AEFW in general, dip with Melafix. It works faster than Bayer, it's gentle on corals, and it's very hard on any and all inverts, including AEFW.

This goes for you too [MENTION=326871]macdaddynick1[/MENTION] -- Melafix is outstanding. If you're looking for an effective new dip give it a shot.

Melafix like the one for the fish rot? I'm definitely going to check it out. The reason I like bayer so much is that it is gentle on the smooth skin acros. I've never had an RTN from it. Other dips like revive would usually kill any smooth skin I've tried them on. Well I guess it wasn't as effective as I thought it would be, or maybe it was a user error.

Correct. That's how I got AEFW myself, Bayer doesn't do the job even at high dose and long dips..

Melafix knocks them off quick. And it's gentle on corals so long as you don't dip more than 6 minutes. It's a quick dip, and it blows 'em all away. Can't recommend it enough.

What dosage do you use the Melafix? Do you dilute it or straight from the bottle? Is it safe for all corals like LPS and softies?

As far as I know it's safe for all corals, i've dipped all corals in it and they've survived but I can only fully recommend for SPS. There's three kinds of melafix. The ONLY difference is concentration of medication (Which is Tea Tree Oil).

Melafix @1%, Melafix Marine @1.25%, and Melafix Pond @5%

The mix I use is as follows;
- Marine (1.25%) 50mL/Gallon
- Regular (1%) 62.5mL/Gallon
- Pond (5%) 12.5mL/Gallon

The dip is safe for 6 minutes, but if you wander around and come back 15 minutes later your coral will not be happy. Just be mindful of the time, make sure to have some flow in the dip (Turkey baster or tiny ph) and rinse the coral well in clean SW before putting in tank.

Nope, I use the above mentioned formulas, ad divide the dosage by whatever volume of water I'm using in ounces.
