A naso not showing any desease symptoms yet

i bought a naso tang and it has been in my QT for a week now. the fish is eating and looks healthy. there are no signs of Ich or marine velvet uptill now.

I would like to know, if things keep up like that for another 5 weeks does that mean that the fish is desease free or is it possible that the fish might still be carrying the desease but has not shown the symptoms because its immune system is in good shape.

if the fish might still be infected but not showing symptoms should i do a copper treatment anyway now to be on the safe side and save some time or what?

The Naso tangs are highly disease resistant and rarely sucumb to disease if living conditions are appropriate-good water quality- a large tank suitable for a fish that will approach two feet in lenght. A few weeks in QT should be sufficent to know that it is disease free. I prefer to use Prazipro rather than Copper it is highly effective and will also treat any internal parasites if any. A fresh water dip would also be a good idea before putting into your DT. Make sure you know how to do this properly.

Bryan,

so you suggest not to use any medication now? I already have cupramine and i will be using garlic to deworm

Prazi is not used instead of copper, and garlic doesn't deworm.

I would suggest a bit more research on meds prior to actually using them. That way you will be sure to treat with the proper meds, if need be.

As to the OP, it is always possible that a fish can carry a disease and not show signs. So, it really becomes a personal decision: to treat or not to treat. I personally don't, if I see no signs of problems...but I also QT for 2 months, because IME, problem can show up weeks and weeks into QT.

As Peter says above, read before treating. That said, I recommend prazipro for all new fish. Other than that, treat ONLY if problems occur.

Garlic may make you feel like you're using a harmless natural treatment, but this is irrelevant if doesn't do the required job. If you want to deworm your fish, try Jungle anti parasite medicated food. Contains both Praziquantel & Levamisole, and is good for most internal worms. JM2c
