Hi y'all,
I made a new frag rack for my eurobraced 180. It's mounted with rare earth magnets on the back wall of my tank.
The magnets are so strong that this rack does not move or tilt at all when pushed.
The idea came from H@rry's magnet mount for his powerhead. He made a very sturdy magnet mounting base by encasing a rare earth magnet into a solid plastic block using casting resin. I adopted his method to produce the magnet base for my frag rack.
Here's what I used - a plastic container, rare earth magnet, small section of egg crate for a support arm, a magnetic sheet:
A picture of 1 x 1 x 1/2 inch size rare earth magnet (a neodymium magnet from Magnet4less):
An assembled magnet base/arm for my frag rack. The rare earth magnet sticks to the magnetic sheet (one that came on the face of a phone book with an ad printed on it) under the plastic container holding the egg crate section upright against the side of the plastic container :
I mixed up casting resin according to the instruction on the box and poured it into the plastic container for my magnet base:
Casting resin hardened fairly quickly into a clear solid block. It was hard after a few hours. I waited for 72 hours to let it completely cure up.
H@rry cautioned me about how strong these magnets are. So I held one firmly in my hand and was very careful not to get it too close to another one on a table. However, the darn magnet on the table flew over to meet the one in my hand. I had a heck of a time trying to separate the two. Then it happened again after the resin cured up. I had two of the finished magnet mounts in my hands to show them to Reilly. As I loosened my grip to hand over one of the magnet base to him, it flew into the other one and broke off the egg crate piece
I think that a magnet one size smaller (1 x 1 x 1/4) may work just as well without being a bit of nuisance.
In any event, the rack is finished and my SPS frags are sitting nicely on the rack in the well lit section of my tank.
I have some BRS magnet-mounted frag racks on the side of my tank but they are too small and they tend to sit in the shaded parts of my tank since they don't stick out far enough in the well lit area. They also teeter easily if I put too many frags on it. The new DIY rack is definitely an improvement.
