A packing issue/question ...

I've been ordering quite a bit of equipment and supplies from Marine Depot lately, and I've been having some issues with the packaging. I don't have an actual complaint - the orders have all arrived intact and without missing items. However, there are some things that mystify me about the way the orders have been packed, and some things that lead me to believe that disaster is only a matter of time.

I get a lot of stuff delivered by UPS, including my marine depot orders. The marine depot boxes arrive in substantially worse condition than anything else I order. They are often leaking packing peanuts, and the taped seams are often ripped. Internally, bulk products are almost always spilled or leaking. I believe I know why.

The packing philosophy seems to be to use an oversized box, fill halfway with packing peanuts, place merchandise, complete the fill and seal with a single piece of tape across the top flaps. This causes two problems:

1) Not taping the end seams of the box results in the box being much less strong than if they were taped. Lateral compression of the box can lift the top flaps and tear the tape, basically opening the box.

2) Using an oversized box may be intended to provide additional cushioning, but the box is typically slightly underfilled with compressible packing peanuts which means that things can move around inside the box and that the box can be more easily compressed.

I've tried to note these problems and ask for tight packing and taped seams in my order comments, but this seems to be useless. I would sure appreciate it if an appropriate size box were used, if the peanuts were slightly compressed in the packing process, and if all the seams were taped. It's no fun cleaning up minor liquid and dry material spills, and I have no idea how many garbage bags of packing peanuts I've had to throw away in the last month.

I'm just waiting for the day a completely torn open box arrives at my doorstep. It's not a problem of being cheap with supplies - Marine Depot is using bigger boxes and much more packing material than necessary, but not really seeing any benefit from it.

Anybody else have these problems, or is it just me?

lol i live local to marine depot so ups delivers my boxes looking like new.. but i do agree.. i got 3 aquastiks the box was 18x 12x10 lol for aquatiks.. a padded pack would have done the job.. better to be safe then sorry though.

Yeah - I just got a single 3/4" PVC strainer delivered in a box 12" on a side.

I guess my point is that it seems like the overpacking is not actually protecting things better - it's making the whole package weaker in some cases - especially when they ship something heavy.

I agree I just got A huge box !!!! I ordered A 200gal tropic marin (seasalt) and the bucket was completly split up both sides, the only thing that was holding it was the reinforced rings at the top, I lost probably 25 gal. worth of salt. I could of fit four buckets in this box. but ofcourse it was full of peanuts that didn't help A bit obviously.
but on A good note: they gave me A 10.00 dollar credit, so it equals out I guess.

Thansk for the feedback, we are always looking for ways to improve and packaging has been looked at. I have met with our packaging suppliers and they have suggested changing the shape of the packing peanuts we use. An interlocking "S" shaped one has performed better for them so that is what we would move to.

In regards to the boxes, our warehouse should not be using oversized boxes. I will speak to our warehouse managers and see to it that a change is made.

Please let us know if there's anything we can help you with.

I was going to start a new thread, but I found this one. I love everything about marinedepot.com, except the packing. I don't know if you have switched to these other peanuts or not, but it won't matter. In fact, do almost all my shopping for everything online and marinedepot is the only place that still uses peanuts (that i order from) They get all over the house, then I have to put them in garbage bags to throw out or they fly all over when trash is removed. One large item and I got so many peanuts it fills my trash for the week.
Anyway, not a big deal, and marinedepot is still my first stop for all my stuff, but just in case others hate peanuts as much as i do, I thought I would mention it.

I can't let this go either. As much as I love MD (and I order a lot), I gotta say something. Yesterday I received an order from Marine Depot. When I went to pick it up in the mailroom, I had the experience I always have when getting a box from MD. My box is always easy to spot in there - it's the one that is half crushed with peanuts spilling all over the floor.

Do you guys realize how much structural integrity you lose by only running one piece of paper tape across the top of the box, and not fully taping the ends? On yesterday's box, 3 of the 4 end seams were completely ripped, and the other was hanging on by a couple of the filaments in the tape that you use. Half the packing peanuts were missing from the box. It takes at least 4 days for a box to make it from you to me (UPS ground), and they ALWAYS show up crushed.

Perhaps next to your shipping options you could have another button to check, where you charge an extra 5 cents for fully taping the box closed. I would certainly check it every time.

Yeah I to love Marine Depot, i order a couple thousand dollars worth every year, in fact I place orders almost weekly to bi-weekly.
I am amazed at how huge some of the boxes are. My biggest complaint is: I have been ordering a lot of Tropic Marin salt, The box is always trashed, the peanuts are all over the UPS truck and my front porch, the bucket open and the bag of salt laying out there, 1 tip is Please tape the bucket shut so the bag of salt stays in.
Another is find a box that is only slightly bigger than the bucket otherwise it just flails around inside and it makes matter sworse I think.
I love Marine Depot otherwise though!
