A Pale Blue Dot – My SPS Dominated Reef

Well this will be my 4th build thread on RC...has anyone discovered a cure for this disease yet?

My newest build will be a 75 gal custom tank. I am very excited about getting my new glass. Over the past few months I have been building a new home office space, one of the perks of the kids moving out. Construction continues but it is almost finished.

My inspiration for this new tank will be Deep Space, thus the reference to Carl Sagan's famous words after seeing a photograph of Earth taken from Voyager I as it left our solar system. As some here know, I am a photographer and my favorite subjects are rocket launches and deep space objects - see my homepage for some of my works. This will be a very interesting project for me as I try to bring into this reef some of the shapes and colors often seen in my deep space photos. It may not turn out this way but it gives me something to work towards, and it should be a lot of fun!

At this time I am torn between two tank designs, one 32x32x18 and the other 40x24x18. In either case the tank will have a black back wall, black silicon, and Starfire Glass on 3 sides. Behind the back wall will be my overflow area as well as (perhaps) a dedicated refugium. I wanted the refugium to be part of the DT as opposed to the sump for a few reasons, one being I was thinking about some mangroves to add a natural touch, and secondly I want to provide a protected food source for copepods...a mandarin will make for a perfect alien species don't you think. I plan on using EchoTech LED lighting, for me the idea of RGB controlled colors will be fantastic"¦RGB colors are the primary color filters I use in my dedicated CCD camera that is attached to my telescope. Of course automation will be key in my design, as it in my astrophotography.

If anyone has suggestions for the tank feel free to chime in. I'm looking forward to posting pics of my progress.

My home office construction is near completion and I've spent the past few weeks researching tank designs and equipment options and have landed on a few decisions.

Parts/Wish List

Custom Tank - 40x22x18, Starfire 3 sides - down to Reef Savvy and Cadlights
Custom Acrylic Work - DIY rear refugium and overflow
Stand - DIY. My stand will have 3 separate areas, 1) Wet Area for sump, plumbing, etc...and will have a custom safety tray in case of floods 2) Electronics Area, slide-out panel for Apex, power bars, Vortech, and LED drivers etc.., and 3) Dry Area for test kits, tools, etc...
Sump - I am going to DIY retrofit my custom 22Gal AIO tank for use as a sump
Skimmer - I haven't landed on a skimmer yet but its down to RO XS-160, SWC Xtreme 160, or Vertex IN-180..in that order. I am also going to install an Avast Swabbie.
Reactors - 3 Avast DIY MR5 Reactors - for GFO, Carbon, and perhaps BP
Flow Pumps - 2 VorTech MP40w ES Pumps
Return Pump - considering the Eheim 1260 (that will give me 6x turnover plus room for my reactors.)
Chiller - JBJ 1/5HP
LED Lighting - I'm still researching LED lighting and haven't landed on a fixture yet. The EchoTech Radion is of course high on my list but the price for this unit is problematic...for significantly less I could DIY so I have been looking at ReefLEDLights - I can build 2 -8x12 units loaded with 84 LEDs (compared to 68) for about half the cost of the EchoTech and use the same LEDs.
Automation - I already own an Neptune Systems Apex and will also take advantage of my home automation system.

Design SketchUp

I'm new to Google SketchUp but so far I am enjoying it...works great as a mockup tool and has helped me a lot in landing on a tank design. My design, as described above, has a custom overflow that is divided into 2 chambers, an Overflow and a Refugium. The refugium will be supplied with water from one of my returns and will drain into the DT.

Tank Ordered! I am having Reef Savvy build me the new tank, 40x22x18. I am really looking forward to getting my tank from Felix.

I will be building a custom overflow and rear refugium chamber for this tank and have a few questions....hoping some folks here can chime in...

I am thinking a Herbie Overflow would be the most appropriate...I want it to be quiet and safe. If I understand this system correctly there are 2 controlled overflow pipes, one operating at full siphon, the other is a safety drain but does catch some excess water that does not get into the main drain. Is this correct? My design below.

1) For the overflow, how do I determine the appropriate width and height? The display tank will be about 58 gallons and I would like to get about 300-400gph....does this sound right? I will have the Vortechs provide the remaining flow.

2) What would be a recommended drain pipe size? The drawing shows 1 inch for the drains.

3) The return will be split into 2 pipes, one going to the refugium and the other to the display tank. I will have a control valve on each but primarily to control the flow into the refugium. What would be an appropriate size pipe for the returns? I was thinking 3/4...the drawing shows 1 inch.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or opinions of this design.

Very good looking build thread. I'm trying to learn google sketchup too. Steep learning curve for someone who's so used to photoshop! Great job with yours.

I would absolutely go DIY LEDs if you're comfortable with it. They're actually very easy to put together. I've put together a 36 LED kit in about 4 hours yesterday and today.

Thx Matt...I might just do the DIY LED thing...it's not intimidating to me, BSEE, but at some point it doesn't make sense...the new SOL pricing for example is pretty sweet....anyhow, I have a ways to go yet before i need lighting and time is on my side...these things can only get cheaper-better at this point....Cheers

Chris that looks like a great plan, like the thread title too.

It is scary how similar your tank is to mine having never met each other. I had Felix build me a 40x23x18 tank and my stand is almost identical. Only difference is my stand is all the same width and I am routing the doors on the side and inserting glass.

Good luck with the build. Keep us posted.

Here are a few pics of my tank area in my new office space. I pulled a dedicated 30amp service to this spot, as well as the existing shared 20 amp outlet I should have plenty of power. I also pulled 2 cat 5 cables, one for my Apex controller, the other will support sensors used by my Elk M1 Gold Home Automation System. I haven't decided on what the m1 system will monitor or control yet (I suspect I will have at least a water sensors in the carpet)...I've always wanted an automated water changer! The m1 gold is very rich in its capabilities. I couldn't be happier on how the cabinet work turned out...hopefully the stand will be as nice as the rest of the furniture.

Hey MN...bright minds think a like. Do you have a build thread? I would love to see some pics.

Looks like a great space for a tank but I question the amount of work youll be able to get done outside of the tank! lol Nice job on the sketch too especially seeing as though youre a noob. I gotta get my feet wet in that system one of these days but the problem is that I would then have to build another "thing"! Id be slaughtered if I did that. Keep the updates coming.

ALso, do you plan to have the stand done by the cabinet maker that did your furniture or are you the furniture maker? Same color I would assume?

Chris,

I don't have a build thread. I'm not the best photographer, here are some pictures.

Are you building all this cabinet work yourself? It looks really good.

That looks awesome! Nice touch with the tile.

I am thinking about building my own stand, I have the skills and tools, however finding the time is an issue. A member of our club here in Altanta builds custom stands and I may have him to it if I can't. I have some interesting ideas that I want to incorporate including a slide out electronics panel and lots of small drawers for storage. I love the work area a larger stand give you.

Time for an update...

It's taken a few months to get my tank from Reef Savvy - I told Felix I am in no rush so no complaints here but the day is coming near, the glass is cut and they are doing their magic now!

On the stand front I found a local cabinet maker who does custom stands for folks here in Atlanta and his work is awesome...he will be starting mine in June. It will be a three cabinet stand, as described above, with one cabinet for all my electronics (a slide out vertical drawer with room to mount my components on one side, all the wiring on the other side, and my controller to the front panel - cool!). The center cabinet will be for the wet stuff (sump, skimmer, reactors, plumbing...). And the third cabinet will be for dry storage (4 drawers to store food, supplies, etc...)...Oh and one other cool feature, there will be a slide out work area in the front of the tank for extra work space when needed.

While waiting for my tank/stand I am working through my sump and overflow design. I am considering a change to my original design, with the refugium next to the overflow. After thinking about it, and doing some research, I am not convinced the benefits are really there, so here is another design I've been working on....a modified BeanAnimal overflow design, low profile with no 90's.....here is a short vid, let me know what you think...

Its been quite some time since I have posted an update to my new tank build...I have made some progress including receiving my custom tank from Reef Savvy...man, what a beautiful tank!

Construction has begun on the stand and sump. Here is a short vid with the SketchUp of the finalized stand and tank design. I am very happy with the design and can't wait to see the final build in my new office.

I have still not made a decision on lighting, the options are plenty these days which is good. I've always had good results with T5's and right now I am leaning towards T5's but I am hoping to see some more advancements in LEDs before I make my final purchase...we shall see.
