Hey everyone.

I have had this pair of black saddle clowns (A. Polymnus) I obtained from another hobbyist for about a month. Anyways, when I picked them up the male had popeye and it really hasn't gotten any better since I've recieved him. I have been feeding them formula 1, flake, both
frozen and freeze dried Cyclopeeze, mysis and has even been eating the nori and formula 2 I put in for the tang. I have had popeye with other clowns before but this is the first time it has never really gone away. I've gone through all my books about clownfish and diseases and according to joyce wilkerson, she says you can try chloramphenicol to treat the eye condition. Me being the chemist I am, I have obtained some but I am really hesitant to try and use it from the research I have done. I was thinking about taking 25-50 mg. of it and letting it soak in about 5-7 cubes of frozen food and feeding that to the clowns for about a week. Anyone use this or have any other alternatives?

Pop eye is usually caused by an infection .. normally associated with a netting injury during capture. Most cases clear up on their own but if you don't see improvement over a couple weeks then you should QT the fish and treat with a double dose of Maracyn 2 - should clear up pretty quick.

Hope this helps.

Maracyn 2 should work? Thanks. I didn't think choramphenicol was something I wanted to use even though she recommended it.

You welcome ... as I recall Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic and may work fine. Maracyn 2 is a relatively weak antibiotic and I always recommend using twice the mfg. recommended dose .. don't forget to use a QT as antibiotics in a ST is not recommended.
