A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

International version of Video

International version of Video

Sorry guys, I received a few postings and PM's that my video wouldn't work outside of the US. Apparently, the music I had used, from Finding Nemo, is copyright protected and would not play outside of the states. So, just for you is an International Version of the video with different music in the background. Happy Holidays!

Dan

Your video has been blocked and this is what I see instead.

This Video contains content from IODA and EMI
one of more of whom have blocked in your
country on copyright grounds.

Same here - it seems it doesn't work outside of the US.

I really appreciate you are considering us from outside US as well, so we can enjoy your tank. Thanks and a happy New Year to you and your family!

SpongeBob???

SpongeBob???

So my son thinks this looks like a character from SpongeBob SquarePants.

You and dca are the most creative and inventive reefers out there. Your two's ideas are going to get marketed soon.

Thanks Wayne! Or should I call you Reefing? Or should I call you Wayne Reefing? When your parents gave you your middle name, did they know that someday you would be a Saltwater enthusiast?

Only kidding...

I appreciate the kudos on the Nori feeder. I don't have near the talent though of DCA or you!

I am standing in a line at Disney World and am finally able to respond to some of these posts.

Happy New Year pal!

Great idea with the pvc pipe feeding station. Even though i dont have a deep tank i may still incorporate ur design. Tank looks great.

Thanks! It appears to be working well. I've been logging onto my webcam every morning and it has been easy enough for our house sitter to use.

I am going to make a couple changes to it when I get home. I want to move the bottom of it out 6"s or so and see if I can't wrap Nori around the entire bottom of the PVC. It is nice not having to get my hands wet! (although that is part of the fun!)

Great idea. Be sure and avoid any siphon potential. Are ends plugged?

Cheers!

Ianshark....

A BIG thank you for potentially saving my tank and marriage!

I read your post on the airplane while traveling out here to Florida. As soon as we landed, I sent my house sitter to Ace Hardware to pick up 3/4" end caps for the PVC.

Great catch! THANK YOU!!!

I just read your build from the beginning, and i am amazed! I love the whole setup and you have given several great ideas.

Hey Robby2782!

I saw that this was your first post on Reef Central and I am flattered that you chose to use it on my build thread!

I appreciate all of the compliments and am glad that I have given you numerous ideas. Let me know if you need any assistance when you set up your tank!

Dan, one thing to do when you feed nori is to cut it into slices after you put it on the clip. That way when the tangs do grab it it will come off in pieces they can munch on instead of the whole sheet of nori getting snatched off and floating around.

Thanks kegogut! I appreciate the idea and the picture.

I used to cut my Nori when I would put it in a clip. Now, I fold the sheets several times and wrap it tightly with several rubber bands. I am going to see how the tangs react when I wrap it tightly around the pvc.

Regards,

Dan

amazing

amazing

I just spent the last 3 and ahalf hours reading through your build. It was one of the best threads I have seen on any forum! Kudos to you! That was just amazing! I did skip acouple of posts though and was just wondering? What does a man with everything get for Chrismas! Man you must have got a lot of ties socks and underwear cuse you pretty much got everytrhing else! LOL

Great build, fantastic looking tank! You should be very proud of it!

Happy New Year! looking forward to more updates!

I have 15 tangs and know the feeding frenzy your talking about with the sheets. My best way has been folding two sheets in half and putting it under the magnets for cleaning your glass. Holds it tight and the next time you put more in they seem to like the peice under the magnet from last time the most.

Thanks wm jim!

I'll have to give that one a try. I could probably put 20 sheets of Nori in my tank and have it all gone within a couple of hours. Sometimes I will put 1/4 head of Romaine lettuce in the tank and watch it disappear. Unfortunately, it doesn't give the fish much in the way of nutritional benefits.

I have looked online for other alternatives to your typical Nori sheets. I'd love something thicker.

A LFS that I have gone to recommended me feeding my tangs broccoli spears. He suggested to first freeze them (to kill something) and then to thaw and feed. I might try that one too!

I am very late to the party, but happy to be here.

Great to see such a spectacular local tank.

Thanks smtank!

You aren't late for the party and it certainly will be going on for a long time. The one thing that seems to be constant about reefing is change. Lot's of things are always changing.

I've been getting lots of ideas, on my little vacation, of things to do with my refugium, 150 gallon rock/filtration/frag tank and some of my QT's. I have a number of projects that will be keeping me busy in the fish room for quite some time.

Welcome!
