A. subulata

Reef Bass

colors and textures
I procured a most beautiful mini colony today.

Acropora subulata from Divers Den. 4" tennis ball of polyps from the tip to the depths of the inner branch crotches. Oodles of 3+" long, 3/16" thick branches. Mostly blue after shipping but also purple in the vendor's pic. Dipped so clean there was hardly any detritus in the dip container afterwards.

No pics for you! The lights are off in the tank as I do for the first day for all shipped new arrivals. IMHO, new arrivals have generally experienced enough stress between no flow bagging, transport, potentially large temperature variations and potentially different water chemistry that I don't add light stress to the mixture on day 1.

Did I mention it was also reasonably priced? :D

Apparently I wasn't done getting my purple on, as I also added a red and purple with green mouths war coral, a purple and green Duncan, and a purple with green mouths blasto merletti.

More dancing...

Hows the new coral doing after dipping etc? Still lookin good?

Krikey it's a beauty! It just glows. (insert drooling Homer emoticon here)

One of the say 50 branches has lightened in color, but is still fleshy with polyps. I'm keeping my eye on it.

Coral shapes can be vastly different and people have different preferences. I have a fondness for the chubby cones of A. spathulata, for example. When I saw my A. desalwii table (basically white with pink tips), something clicked and I felt that "Oh wow" thing. This A. subulata with its beautiful round form and soft but substantial color is doing that for me also.

I will be getting my camera out this weekend. Normally I don't bother shooting a new coral the first week or so of arrival because it is usually not as colorful and furry having been shipped, dripped, dipped and placed under new lighting.

Thanks Bobby!

Here we go. It survived dripping, dipping and several days now of my "take it easy on new arrivals" lighting schedule. Color is heading in the right direction and polyps are coming out to say hello. :)
