A thought on new heaters

I had never read this before, so I thought I would post it. May be helpful.

Put the heater in place. Don't plug the heater in yet, it is important to let the heater sit in the water in the tank for at least ½ an hour. That way the glass on the heater can acclimatize to the temperature of the water. This prevents thermal cracking.

....also thought you did that in reverse as well (wait for 1/2 hour or so after you unplug it before taking it out of the tank) as I don't think it would be good to take a hot heater out, especially in a cold room

Yeah, I've made the mistake before of forgetting to unplug my heater in the sump during a water change and then seeing the heater steaming from being out of the water and very hot.....

Precisely my point.

Considering that Jet Engines have a 600 degree C tempearture swing (and are made from Titanium), WHY would anybody want "glass"?

It's so.... '80s.

I have a titanium in my main tank, but have a left over glass one i use in when making a new batch of water, so there are few out there......but certainly any new purchases would be titanium

Titanium or glass heaters now a days aren't built like they were...Seems like older ones last 7 years newer ones last 7 months??? My 2cents

I have quit using Titanium heaters because they have stopped working in not only my tank but in tanks I have installed for other folks. I have had an Ebo Jagr glass heater for over 15 years that I still use. I also used them on all my frag tanks when I was doing a lot of fragging. Not one of those has ever failed me. If there is a good brand of titanium heater out there let me know.

Going on two years with Finnex titanium....no issues...built in sensor turns heater off if it comes into contact with air...

I used 2 titaniums 500wt on a african cichlid tank for almost 5 yrs w no problems. still working when i took it down a few months ago... Cant remember brand name tho.
