Abalone and Ozone

Hello there,

My name is Richard Hendry, I work for an abalone farm in New Zealand. We are not strictly aquarists, but are more involved in aquaculture, and thought we would run past you guys a recent project we are investigating. We are running a small RAS system, it now holds about 2000 kg of NZ abalone.

We are currently investigating the use of ozone, through our protein skimmers, and as a separate disinfection system, but feel there are many uncertainties regarding the by-products, and specifically the tolerance of abalone to them.

I was wondering if to your knowledge anyone is using ozone with abalone?
We are running some trials at the moment, and an interesting pattern is emerging.
Look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested.
All the best,
Richard Hendry

Hi Richard, the folks in the lab next to mine are currently working on breeding/recrutment of the black foot abalone for re-population in the wild. The extra filtration that they use is a MASSIVE uv sterilizer/ filtration device. the unit uses (in order of water passage) a 15 micron filter, 4 two foot 40watt uv bulbs, 10 micron filter, 5 micron filter, and finally a 1 micron filter. the incoming seawater is pre-filtered down to 20 microns. i inquired about the use of ozone, but they decided against it due to the logistical issues in the particular room they are running the tanks in. They experiment is still under way but i will let you know what happens when the recrutment is observed.

Please note that in using ozone in the mineral / mining industry there is huge difference in using ozone that is electric spark generated and that produced by UV. one works and one is almost useless (electric spark generated)

I was just talking about using uv as a form of sterilization, not to create ozone. to do that i would reccomend a marine aquarium ozone generator.

Crazzy,
Are you saying that UV generates more ozone than the "spark" corona discharge? I have found quite the opposite. CD units are way more effective at producing ozone. You wont see anything but CD units for large scale ozone production.

I know that many aquariums run ozone. At the facility where I worked, we used a side stream of ozone that ORP'd at 650 for 2 minutes, then was mixed into the return flow and degassed. We kept large abalone (local species to Northern California), and lots of juveniles in the tanks. All other inverts were fine as well.

I know that hypobromous acid is one of the worst offenders as a byproduct, but we never had an issue with it as long as the ORP was at NSW levels.

Richard,

I'm an abalone farmer too. I sent you an email and I'd love to hear about your trials.

Christine

The by products issue should be easy to resolve by running all the effluent water through some high quality carbon.
