My wife and I paid a visit to ABC Reefs today, first time we have been there, very nice. The layout, quality, selection and health of the fish and corals was grade A and the person who waited on us was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to talk to (I forgot his name though). A real breath of fresh air for us long suffering Syracuse reefers who had to either order online or travel a couple hours each way to Rochester and/or Buffalo to get nice fish and corals prior to this shops opening. The only other place in Syracuse isn't worth mentioning, if you're from around here you know it and probably avoided it too.
I had been out of the hobby for the past couple of years and just today started circulating saltwater through my new ELOS mini - its good to be back. I bought some very nice (though somewhat pricey) live rock (three pieces) from ABC while I was there to aquascape with so I could get the live sand in and the water moving. This rock supposedly comes from Australia area, no color and pretty dead all around but very unique shapes and pretty porous yet strong enough to allow me to drill a hole through it so I could place them on an acrylic rod form I made. As we all know aquascaping can be a major pain trying to get just the right look - aquascaping in a mini is in my opinion even more brutal. Difficult to get any kind of interesting shape going yet still stay far enough away from the glass on all four sides to allow for the magnet to clear for thorough and easy cleaning of the glass.
My wife works only five minutes away from ABC Reefs so that's another plus, though not for her. I foresee many trips in her future for foods, additives, etc....
I will snap some pictures here shortly and post them if I figure out how to do that again.
