If your using it purely for nitrification and denitrification then... no
However, while your at it, you should entertain the idea of developing it into a sort of cryptic refugia

I don't have a light on my sump and I have feather dusters galore and sponges everywhere, It looks pretty cool. The only thing I don't like is the fact that I don't have a macro algae down there for the pods to live in and breed in. It doesn't really seem to matter I have huge pod populations in my display and in my sump. I have three main pod eaters in my tank as well, two are wrasses and a dragonet (red scooter blenny).
