acan frags, on a rock or just on the sand?

I don't really think if it's on a rock or sand will make any difference if all other factors are identical. ie light, chemistry and so on.

The main things I use to determine where I'll put mine is 1. how I want it to grow or look like or 2. If, how and when I plan on fraging it.

I'll put a frag next to a rock, let it encrust and then pop off the original frag once it's got a good few polyps on the rock. If I only want a peice for future fragging I'll put it in the sand so that all I have to cut through or contend with is the skeletal stucture of the coral. that way you can also trip all the new growth at the edges and get many more new frags.

Though if you like the mound acan brain look you may want it in the sand just for aesthetics but simply speaking, no, I don't believe there is any particular benefit to the coral either way.

My acans always did better for me in the rockwork. Due to the way that they grow and spread, sand always seemed to inhibit their growth as opposed to helping it... Also when they are located in the sandbed, the chances of having sand particles dusted upon them and irritating them increases as well... JMO... ;)

^^^^ Same for me.

+1 for rockwork

My Acans seem happier on my rockwork; on the sand, they never fully opened.

+1 all of my acans are on rockwork although I have heard they prefer the softness of the sand(if you can keep it out of their mouths)

I recently moved mine up to 6-8" off the bottom, not sure if its extra light, or less sand , but they look a bit healthier now. :D
