Acan ID question Bowerbanki or not?

Here are a couple of acans. The green one is for sure a acan bowerbanki but the orange one I am not sure of what type of acan it is. I got it from LFS where it was sold very cheap since it had some dead areas on it. Now it looks nice. Any idea if it is a bowerbanki as well?

That's look VERY similar to the piece myself, grisha, revhtree and a few others have except a different colors. They are sold as either maxima's, scoly, lobo's etc.

Nobody seems to have any clue what they are except that they definitely aren't Maxima's:confused:

Thats the best exerpt of your coral your gonna find on RC. Unless you look up sufunk, grisha, revhtree and a few others' threads on theirs

nice bowerbankie. the other could be one as well it has that marbleing thing or as mention above can we see another pic of it top down?

DEFINITELY not a sub echinata. I have 2 other subs and these are nothing like them. Some of the polyps are bigger than 2"inches across.

Not really like a lobo either, imo and i stare at one right in front of me all the time. Imo, it is definitely an acan of some sort, which one?? who knows:confused:

Who cares?!?! They are VERY nice!

I'm not saying its a maxima, but how can you be so sure that there are none coming out of Omen? Why, because somebody wrote it on RC?

extinguishfire, What ever it is, its beautiful!

I'm not saying that it isn't a Maxima. I still kind of think that it is. If you actually READ what i wrote, I was saying that everybody who responds to the threads about them on here says that "they definitely aren't Maxima's".

LOL! sorry, I wasn't trying to pick a fight with you. I misinterrupted what you had wrote. I see lots of folks saying that there is no Maximas in the trade.

No problem. I agree that regardless of wether these are Maxima's or not, there have to be some Maxima's out there. I'm sure there are plenty of people that would risk whatever penalty to sneak a few out to make a quick buck.

Im one of those people :)

Besides collection being illegal think about it... First you would have to sneak past them(Sultan's law enforcement&customs) to get it, then sneak past our customs to bring it back here? With our customs knowing where the person came from? Talk about mission impossible..ESPECIALLY in Bush's 'Age of Terroism';)
There's several books that explain that acan maxima's are endemic to the (very limited)reefs of Oman. There's countless articles on the internet that explain that collection is illegal from that country and strictly enforced, therefore no acan maximas in the industry.

It's not like you would get a slap on the wrist and a small fine for taking an illegal coral out of the waters in Oman. They could do whatever they wanted to you...most likely imprisonment for quite a while or worse. If the guys in charge were having a bad day they could kill you and nobody would say a thing. I seriously doubt anybody is going to risk the consequences to smuggle a fairly bland coral. Maxima's don't come in all the crazy colors like the Aussie Acans.

smuggling happens EVERYWHERE, people break the law everyday(even in Omen). unless your guarding the boarders of Omen yourself.....

there are maximas in the industry.

corals know no borders. Try to tell them to sit in one area during a broadcast spawning event :) I know for a fact the Sultan can not change oceanic currents :D

The books say a lot of things and should be changed YEARLY to adjust to all the new findings. Veron says a lot of corals don't come from Tonga but many of us have seen them with our own eyes. They may not have been there during his fact finding missions or they where over looked which isn't that hard to do with so much coral coverage :)

Why? Because someone wrote it on RC it? :D
I dont think we have any coral taxonomists in RC? I think there actually is a student though, maybe even two. Funny thing is the only people who are saying anything about maximas are the people who thought they bought one, and the seller who sold it as such, because the wholeseller told him thats what it was, because some guy told him, what some other guy suggested to him...So on and so on.. But not a coral taxonomist in the bunch! These corals are coming in from reputable wholesellers and dealers... Not some back alley durring the night...

I find it hard to beleive that people are naive enough to believe it. Acan maxima hunh? This coming from a group of people that have been collecting and calling favias and acans 'pineapple' and 'moon corals' for how many years now? And presently still do!
Smuggling does happen everyday, but do you honestly beleive all these people are going to advertise a smuggled coral on all these web sights that are offering acan maximas? And some smuggled coral where I put up thousands of dollars just to get to those waters, let alone risking my arse and life. To turn around and sell it online for $200? Real deals of life and limb are more like in the tens and hundreds of thousands, and certainly no one would be hearing or talking about it....
