Acan ID question Bowerbanki or not?

Exactly Justin. If there truly were Maxima's being smuggled out they would be THE most expensive corals avaliable. Many times more expensive than Rhizo's and Japanese Lords.

 They don't have to be smuggled guys, what's stopping the coral spawn from moving across the invisible national border? Oman doesn't fence the ocean in nor does the Sultan control the currents :D

Science updates itself daily, books take MUCH longer to catch up. What may be true today most likely won't hold next year in terms of coral classification and location.

True, but what has stopped there spawn all these decades from only being endemic to one area?

True again :) So we are at the whim and mercy of speculation and ignorance until science does catch up? If indeed there is catching up in that particular arena to be had...??

Who says it they haven't taken hold elsewhere over the decades? The lack of finding a species in all the surrounding areas does not mean they are not there, just that they didn't find any at the time. Who knows, the project could have been rushed, some one had too much to drink the night before, etc.

Now your reaching!
What I meant by decades, is decades of obvious research in to coral habitat and taxonomy to arrive at a synops of not decades but centuries of established behaviour and local.

I highly doubt Veron breezed through Oman on a drunken stuper and said to himself

" Well, self, your drunken butt hasnt seen any A. maximas anywhere else over this past poorly funded weekend excursion, so they must NOT be anywhere else!!mmmkay?"

Well, I guess he could've.. but I doubt it! :D

-Justin

You honestely think Veron does all the research himself? Having met quite a few researchers myself I've heard the tales ;) While Veron isn't the partier, the others doing a majority of the diving running transects are a different animal all together

I've seen the "research" behind a few different countries fisheries. Science isn't always a given truth, politics can and do play a part. Mexico claims a bunch of endemics. They are so endemic the run all the way to Costa Rica. Mexican endemics on holiday in Costa Rica I guess  I'm not saying this is the case here, but you can't over look the fact science is far from unfoulable!

I can accept that...begrudgingly ;)

But you of all people should know the ploy behind these so called acan maximas .. And the people who are passing them off as such ;)
C'mon out with ya, you know your playing devil's advocate
As always though, good to hear your input Gresh

I dont think money was behind it, at least not in my case. I paid less for this than i would have paid for a colony this size of lord's or echinata's.

So the question remains though, what are they???

Even though i paid lobo price i can tell you 100% that they aren't lobo's. It may be hard to tell from the pics but i'll bet that everyone who has one will agree that they definitely aren't lobo's.

Imo, no question it is an acan of some sort. I could be wrong but i have never heard of sub echinata's with 2"+ polyps. Even the baby polyp's on mine are bigger than any polyp i have seen on a sub echinata. Clearly not lord's, hillae, bowerbanki's or echinata's, imo or any of the favia looking types of acanthastrea. So what does that leave?

 OK, I have what some call a maxima :D I surely didn't pay an arm and a leg though and I didn't buy it under the idea it was a maxima. It was sold as a maxima/lobo/???? and the price was right for a nice looking coral :D

I agree on the other side Justin...using an unknown labelled as a maxima to vastly increase the price. Practice just stinks as does the Japanesse label as well.

sufunk actually I think theres a couple hillaes that look very similar :

With polyps 2+"; A. maximas get up to 4"

Then there's the A. ishigakiensis:

Have you eliminated the Symphyllia erythraea yet?

I don't "want" it to be a Maxima. I could care less what it is as long as it looks nice. I can say it "undisputably" isnt a lobo imo because i look at it every day from 3" away not seeing a pic and trying to tell. It doesn't look or feed like any lobo i have ever seen.

I really dont think the hillae pic's are even similar at all to what I have. The 3rd pic is the only one that is even close but that one still looks significantly different from what i have in my tank, imo.

There's 10 different Lobophyllia specie..So you've personally cross referenced everyone? And not through a pic trying to tell?

So you think it looks like this?

Man I love these Threads!!! I have had several of these corals that are flying around and IMHO they are Lobo or Symphyllia . With that said I am a firm beliver in "I don't care what it is as long as I like it!!"

I have a Purple with Orange center piece I picked up as a Echinata but I believed it was a Hillea..........who knows but I liked it. (being a hobbiest and owning a store is like being a crack dealer hooked on crack)
Some of the polyps are elongated and up to 2" (expanded flesh) it's a healthy piece so I don't want to chop it for a skeleton shot yet.

Hey Gresh, I'm with ya on the brew.........all I kept seeing was "beer" hahahaha

No, i haven't cross referenced every one. Apparently, you are misunderstanding me. I'm not saying it is a Maxima. I'm not saying i know what it is, i don't. I'm saying, imo, i know what it isnt and that definitely includes lobo and hillae, imo.

Symphillia is probably the closest looking but it certainly looks different than any i have seen in person or pics of,imo.

I understood you very well.. You said and I quote,

" Everyone in this thread come on over, beers on me!!:D"

:lol2:

To Bill Braskey!!

No worries sufunk :)
