Acan killer

Can you help me identify?

It had what looked like a blue eye/periscope coming out of it. It has been in the tank for about three weeks. I came home from work on Friday and it had hundreds of white tentacles that were eating one of my acans that was about 3 inches away from the coral.

The acan is not doing well. I think it is a goner.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but I'm gonna take a wild guess and say what you saw was probably a peanut worm. They don't eat coral, but will eat dead tissue off of a coral. The coral may be dying and the worm is removing the tissue.

I can see if I can get a better picture tonight, but I think it was probably the tentacles from the orange eye lobo.

All the tentacles kind of broke off or receded when I reached in a moved the acan. The acan was definitely alive and well.

Do you mean like mesenterial filaments coming from the lobo to attack the acan?

That is exactly what it looked like. 75% of the acan it attacked is now only a skeleton.

Thank you for the information. I have it segregated currently. I'll have to make sure I keep it away from any other corals.

Ouch. Thankfully I only ever see sweepers, mesenterial filaments can be nasty stuff. Hopefully you can save some of the acans, and that they are faster growers than mine.
