Acanlord Mounting and Growing Questions

Do acanlords require a flat slat rock to grow on?
Do they require a rock to grow?

Well I am curious since I have never seen these grow and unlike the candy canes, hammers, torches etc. I am curious to how they grow and do they need a rock to expand? Or do they just grow more heads without a rock?

they build their own skeleton. however, with the use of a base, they spread more quickly (can anyone back that up... i really dont know)

I notice that many acans have a flat piece of rock but I do wonder if it requires a rock to grow since, like you mentioned it formes its own skeleton doesn't that mean it doesn't need a rock. This is pretty confusing to me.

Its best to mount your frag on a rock for it to spread. It does grow its own skelton, but from what I've seen, the flesh will spread over the rock and the skelton will grow underneath it.

I wouldn't say they require a rock to grow, but it grows faster when there is a rock for it to spread on.

Below is a picture of a frag that I got. They are micros, which are like acans, just smaller. But you can see how I mounted them onto a flat rock. I used epoxy to make a "ramp" to form the transition to the rock.

I just took this picture to show you the growth. This is 1 1/2 years later.

This was a acan frag that I got for free at my local reef club meeting. It was cut from a huge chunk right at the meeting on a tile saw.

They cut it right through the heads and everything. I have it leaning against another rock in a different part of my tank but does anyone think I should do anything special to mount/place this one?
In just 2 months the heads on the top are fully healed and round and on each side of the frag there is 4 heads starting to grow and a few already have color and are almost completely developed.

Well as I explained, mounting it and using epoxy is what I do.

If you just leave it the way it is, it'll continue growing down the side until it looks like a ball.

Hmm so having a rock helps it grow faster? So if I did not mount it to a rock would it still be able to grow like a dome shape kind of thing?

I see one more question about acan, are they puffy like pillows are are they flat? I got some and they seem flat but I have seen some others who have em and they are fluffly like pillows.

Eh scratch that one more question
Just how many kinds of names are there for acans? I see micros and lordhowinesS etc. Could someone give me a list?

micros are micros. they are not acans.

there are any different types of acans. i personally favor lords. not because of the crazy. i just like the way they look. the others are just... meh

So what so special about lords vs just acans? sorry for all these questions, new to corals and what not. Been mostly fish for a long period of time.

Lords and Acans are the same thing unless your talking about Acans in general. It comes from Acanthastrea lordhowensis (sp?) Lord coming from lordhowensis, and acan from Acathastrea. I call my acans or sometimes acan lords.

BTW: Micros and Acan Lords are somewhat similar not too different. they say a cross between Favia and a Acan. But micros are micros

Ah I see thanks for clearing things up. So in the end acans can grow even without a rock but it'd take longer. So either way they both can grow and grow out and form a dome shaped acan colony.
