Just 'won' a Viper 150w on ebay for my 10 gal frag tank. This tank used to be part of a fish only qt set up, with two seperate tanks under one lighting fixture. It had crappy lighting on it for the fish, a 32w full spectrum flourescent (one fixture over two tanks)
When we decided to use it to try out fragging a few things we added a 125 w equivalent compact flourescent flood light 5100k (like the one Melev uses in his coral QT and sump)
I've actually seen growth in my mushrooms and paly's with that light, but not in the zoas. Since I am planning to get a larger frag tank in a few months I wanted the versatility of the clamp on Viper, and found a new one for a great price.
Anyway, what would be the best way to acclimate this tank over to the halide? Would it be best to keep the 32w flourescent bulb going for now and start the halide on a really short photo period, or just switch completely over to the new lamp and go with egg crate or mesh over the top? The only thing that worries me about the new lamp is if it will get hot enough to melt the plastic fixture on the flourescent bulb.
