Achilles and Mimic Lemon Peel Tangs

My 240 will be up and running pretty soon.

I'm going to use around 300 lbs of 5 year old aged live rock, so hopefully the cycle goes smooth.

In the next few months I plan on adding an Achilles Tang. I also recently spotted a Mimic Lemon Peel Tang in a friends tank and loved it.

I'm curious that since the Ach. and Mimic are in the same family, should they be added at the same time???

Or should I introduce the Achilles first, and let it get nice and happy in the tank... since they are pretty fragile. Then introduce the Mimic a year down the line and hope the Achilles doesn't go after it too hard?

Also... have a purple, yellow and yellow bellied blue tang.

Thanks :)

Is your tank an 8' 240? If so, you should be okay. I would get both, QT them separately and then add them and all the rest of your tangs to the DT at the same time. I did that when I first introduced two yellows, a purple, desjardini, hippo, powder blue and achilles tangs to my 370gal. It seemed to work pretty well, but unfortunately, after unsuccessful hyposalinity treatments for ich, I had to pull the fish from the tank and treat with copper in QT tanks. I suffered some losses along the way :(.

In six weeks I plan on adding an achilles, powder blue, convict, yellow, desjardini, purple (maybe 3 - not sure yet) and hippo to the DT that has a bunch of angels and a fowler's tang. Hopefully, they establish their hierarchy without too much trouble. If not, I'm prepared to remove whichever fish is necessary.

Good luck.

Thanks Haffs :)

It's an 8x2x2' tank. The place I'm going to buy them for QTs for 4 weeks before they sell any fish. They get them eating and make sure they don't have any infections.

I've been QTing everything else here, but with larger fish I really don't have a way of QTing seperate larger fish.

I'm hoping this will be good enough, but I might try to QT the Ach. in the 55, and if I can get a smaller Mimic, QT it in the 20 gal long.

IMO i wouldnt put anything into my DT no matter how long an LFS claims they QT a fish. Its just no worth the aggravation an money!! An Achilles shoul be ok in a 55 for a few weeks. did your lfs state if they treat with prazi and copper duruing their qt period?

It's not a LFS.

He's a hobbyist who doesn't have a store front. He treats all fish for 4 weeks with copper, and not sure what else. I think he's going to start a DD type site down the road.

He will not sell before a fish has been fully through QT.

I just picked up a little purple tang from him on Saturday... he's been through the full QT process, but I'm holding him in a 20 gal long until my 240 has cycled. I'm also going to treat with Prazi a few times while he's hanging out in QT. Then I'll introduce the purple and yellow together. The purple looks fat and healthy BTW :)

I agree with angelfish7. Ask your LFS what exactly they do for QT. Do they preventatively treat with any medications? Either way, I will always put new fish I receive through my QT procedure. I have too much to risk otherwise. If the LFS has them eating, that's great as you don't need to spend that time up front and you can get right into your QT process (whatever that may be). Both achilles I put through QT were in 30gal tanks and they did great. Depending on the size, a 3" achilles will do fine in a 20 long. Also, depending you your QT philosophy, you can divide your 55 in half with eggrate and QT both fish at once. There are many different ways to go at it.

You are a genius :)

I never thought about separating the 55!

I guess I could give the Ach. a little more space since I can find a Mimic much smaller.

Also, this might allow them to get a little more used to each other without the chance of killing each other first :love1:

That's a lot of rock. How's the swimming space for the 5 tangs going to be?
