What is the best method for acquiring a mantis suitable for a species tank?

Carefully and patiently waiting to see what your lfs can get in. just make sure you know what your looking for ( meral spots, color patterns, other distinguishing characteristics) or you can order one online, although 90% of places will not know exactly what they are selling you. tampa bay saltwater will sell you a N. wennerae for $50 to your door. HTH
