Acro almost growing out of the water...

I have an acro that has grown so that several branches are just about breaking the water surface. Should I frag off these branches or will it stop growing at the appropriate level.

I frag branches growing into the glass etc all the time but these are the first that have about reached air. I just want to make sure this doesn't cause any necrosis or other problems.

Thanks for all your help!

Salmander out!

Thanks for the responses everyone.

You are reafirming my initial thoughts but...our tanks are not reefs and once they grow out of the water, the low tide will never come back to submerse them again.

Do you guys/gals have direct experience with this?

They will not grow out of the water. I have a blue tipped formosa that has reached the top. The branches eventually flatten out at the top and they stop growing. It's really neat to look at.

sorry hit the reply before i was done
i was going to say that The part of the reef left out of water is eroded and cut down by waves
but in our tanks we just frag them off

I had some acros hit the surface and the tissue spread out like a mushroom, or the head of a nail. The ones that actually came out of the surface slightly had a nice flat spot of bare skeleton above the water. When I fragged off the tips, I just flipped them upside down and glued the spread out part to the rocks. They seemed to encrust faster and it caused the frags to grow in some interesting shapes. Also seemed to accelerate the lateral branching by inverting them like that. Give it a try and see what happens.

I've seen a 2' diamter colony of garfs Leroy's Blue tip acro that had almost all of its tips out of water and they flattened and rippled. No issues. I sent some back to garf in a trade several years ago and Norm found them interesting;).

Thanks again for the responses folks. What a great site to get good info!

Sounds overwhelmingly like I should do nothing...just let its keep the course. Later I could frag if necessary or to produce these cool forms ya'll are talking about. I'd like to see some pics of how the tips flatten out.

So no one is going to suggest a bigger tank?
Clearly, you need a bigger tank. ;)

Oh, that is an unspoken rule;). Everyone needs a bigger tank. Then you don't have these nasty growth problems:).
