Gday,

Is it possible to keep acro under 150 watts
And has anyone had success doing so.
My tank is 4 ft x 2 ft high x 1.5 ft deep.
I have
2 x 150 watt halides
4 x 20 watt actinics
1 x fluoro light about 30 odd watts

Could I do it successfully

Provided you can supply stable, good water conditions for Acropora, which can be picky ... yes.
That's not a lot of light, not the high end - but high on the rockwork there's probably quite a few that could thrive.

I've had best luck with captive-propagated varieties ... which IMO are somewhat selected to be hardy and color well in aquaria [thus they get passed around widely].

Water quality and clarity will be important with only 150w MH ... or so my experience with 175w bulbs was. But, I kept and grew Acropora with 175's ... with [at times] nice color.
I probably would have better success now, with a more mature tank, larger colonies, and far better reefkeeping skills ... 175's can do it, but IMO requires focus on good water quality and stability.

For discussion on Acropora and such corals, I really like these threads to cover the bases:

Let's talk about water quality in an SPS tank.

Lets talk about lighting an SPS tank

Let's talk about water movement in an SPS tank

I wish we'd get past the `SPS' lumping, but it's great info.

Personally, I'd suggest trying Montipora or Pocillapora first - they're more tolerant, are a good way to `test the waters' for Acropora. Once they're thriving - you'll have conditions set.
