Acropora Question

I have a small question. I am a newb so pardon if this seems silly. I have a 28gal jbj cube. I have a few sps frags. A couple different types of monti digis, a monti capricorn. I also have a couple different types of birdsnest and two acropora frags. All of these corals seem to have good polyp extension except for the acropora frags I got. I do see polyps out on them but they seem smaller than the polyps on the digitas. Is that normal? Are they smaller polyps than the montis?

There are many different species of Montipora and Acropora with many different polyp sizes, growth patterns and individual variability to different environmental (tank) conditions. Just because the polyps are smaller or not as extended on the acros doesn't necessarily mean they are not doing fine.

The frags seem to be doing great. They are a purple color so not sure exactly what they are. They seem to be growing so maybe they are fine. thanks

Try contacting who you got the corals from and inquire what they are..specific species, if possible. If you know what you have it is easier to research issues pertaining to it. That will really help in long-term husbandry.

One other thing. A purple-colored coral is often not an easy color to maintain. Knowing its' species will give you an idea of whether or not you will need to blast it with light (etc.) to keep its color.

The guy i got it from is just as much of a newb as I am. He wasn't even sure what type they were. He got them from a guy whose tank had crashed. He gave them to me because they weren't doing very well in his tank. When I first got them they were bleached and looked a little sick. They have colored back up and even are growing. The fact that I am comparing them to the polyps on a different coral could be totally wrong.

Flip the light on a few hours after it goes off and if they are helthy you should see some extended polyps. Got any pics?

Ok did the light thing and it actually looked like the polyps were more extended than they are during the day.
