there is much more variety in acropora sp.'s, i have a tricolor, maybe a valida, and it has stung a green slimer and caused it to recede on its skeleton.
If they are growing into each other you will have better success and they will figure it out usually, but sometimes you have to snip. If one colony/frag falls into another, you will have an immediate battle.
If I understand it correctly, if an acro detects an offending coral it extrudes it guts during the night and digests the offender. The next morning no ones the wiser except for a bleached neighbor.
