Acros & Monties very pale but growing fast - Picture

you probably have a really bad potassium deficiency. This element becomes much more crucial when you reach close to ULNS numbers.shoot for around 380-400. I bet your at below 300. Thats my 2 cents atleast :)

How old is the tank? What type of rocks did you use to start it off?

Hi,

This set-up has been running since August, but, it was a move from a 2 year old set-up. So it's over 2 years.

Always used live rock.

thanks

my friends got corals that look all bleached like that im thinking its only one of two things too little nutrients since he has a skimmer rated for like 500gallons on a 99 gallon tank or its the lights he has 2 - 4' tek units that he runs like 12 hours a day... mind you they are only on full blast for like 3 of those hours but even so i think he should just cut them back to be like 6 -7 hours full blast and feed his fish more

I leaning more towards not enough nutrience myself. I did how ever cut back 2 hours and raised them a couple inches as I stated above. Some of the white monties are a good 15" from the lights. I don't think T5's will bleach at 15"...would they?

I've never even heard if that :-) I will look into this. Thank you!

What lighting fixture and T5 bulbs are you using? Looks like way too much light to me. You could probably run your lights half of the time that you are with the whites only being ran 2 hours or so. Once the corals are "back to normal" you could slowly ramp the lighting period back up.

Hi,

I run a 6 bulb TEK, Giesemann AquaBlue+ 15000k, Pure Actinic, Midday 6000K , KR Fiji Purple, AquaBlue+ 15000k and Actinic+

As I just wrote above, some of the whiting monties are 15" away from the lights. This is my first T5 set-up (used to run MH). Do you think they would have enough PAR to do damage 15" away?

I was always told that if your lights are to strong you will bleach/STN/RTN your corals? This is not the case with me, they have plenty of tissue, it's just very pale.

1000 thanks
Ray

T5's can blast corals at 15" away. Bleaching, STN and RTN are totally different things. Your corals look bleached. Which could be from too much light or a definciency. My guess is your 13 hours of light is way too much.

What size tank is it and what are the dimensions?

You could run your blues as long as you are but I would cut down your whites to a few hours a day and see if that helps.

The tank is 39x20x16

If I raise the light even higher, will that help?

As we speak:

6" off the water line
11" off the top of the rock work
Giesemann AquaBlue+ 15000k and Actinic+ 10am to 9pm
Pure Actinic, Midday 6000K , KR Fiji Purple, AquaBlue+ 15000k 12PM to 6PM

thanks

Sounds like too much light to me. I would cut your lights way back. Once they color back up you can try and increase the length the lights are on. You'll have to really judge it by the color and growth of your corals. If they start to lighten, feed more and lower how long the bulbs are on.

With my tank- which is a 45 cube 24 x 24 x 24. I have a Tek 4 bulb T-5 fixture( blue +, aquablue special, blue +, fiji purple.

My actinics(blue +, fiji purple) are on from 1pm to 10pm and my whites(blue+, aquablue special) are on from 4-6pm. This is perfect for my tank. Too much longer and the corals lighten up. I originaly had 2 aquablue special as the whites but the corals really responded to me adding another blue +

Interesting. I will deff. cut the 4 main bulbs down. I'll start with 50% reduction and see what comes of it.

Will post results

Thanks man!
