Acrylic Silicone

Bergovoy

Moved On
OKAY, I blew it.

I bought regular CRYSTAL CLEAR Silicone. and forgot about it.

I then grabbed the silicone from my workbench, which is a LATEX Silicone.

I am not sure why I kept going, but I did, (thinking this is what I got, this is what I will use)

I am using it for holding down the Starboard.

I guess my biggest concern is the drying time.

The biggest gap I have is 3/8 x 1/2" and it doesnt look like it is drying too well

The directions only talk about depth, nothing in excess of 1/2" deep

It then goes on.... drying time 1-7 days. (depending on humidity)

UGGGHHHHH!!!!!

I cant wait 7 days......

Will this skin over and if so, will it continue to dry under water.

Should I scrape it out and start over? How long willl the real silicone take to dry...?

Ugghhh

if it isnt one thing, it is something else.

I need to get this tank filled this weekend.

I was hopeing for today...

Latex will not dry under water, it will actually break down. Latex is water soluble. Plus any additives to it might leach into the water. You need to take it out and use GE I windows and doors, clear 100% silicone.

But with the above mentioned silicone, i called the company and asked about it. They told me ammonia will leech out into the water from this sealant. ?

I don't know, But i just called them, and they said that they didn't recommend using any of their products under water, especially in an aquarium, because it will release ammonia.

Everyone here reccomends the GE How could they all be wrong??

Pure silicone should mean pure, nothing else? I am going to pull the tube right now..
brb

I just looked a tube over too, and i don't see where anything would be harmful. My guess is that they are saying not to use it so that if anything should happen, they can't be held accountable.

It also says one the tube... not for aquarium use. but my tube doesn't say anything about those chemicals. what is the label on yours?

Formaldahyde cant be good!

I need to know asap!!!

I either scrape it out or I am good to go.

Also How long for the real silicone to dry before I can fill

Real silicone, really needs only 24 hours, it will actually harden underwater. GE I has a low VOC content 30 or so. DAP makes an aquarium silicone and it has the same VOC content, plus alot of us have used it for years, no adverse affects. My whole 100 gallons sump/refugium is made out of 3 tubes of it.

DAMNIT This is going to be biatch

I jsut scraped out the big areas, that was not problem but the other areas are fairly small and will be more difficult to get at.

And teh Dap Silicone I have says not for continous underwater...

Damnit.

I cant win

maybe you can get it mostly out, then cover the other parts of it with safe silicone. or just use hot water to get it out. you should be able to get a lot of it out like that.

I got it all out.

I cut the silicone from teh glass and lifted out the startboard and washed it all dow,

Not too bad...

I am pi offed.

Where do I find teh GE silicone now. I have just lost a day@!

IMO, GE Silicone II works best. I've used this many times and nothing bad happened. *knocks on wood*

I will let you know exactly which one to look for in a few minutes. I need to look for it.

You can probably get the GE silicone at just about any hardware store (Lowes, Home Depot, etc). Just double check that it is the 100% silicone. They have similar looking tubes that have additives for mold.
