Is there any reason not to use two acrylic pieces as the top to my tank? I have a 115 gallon 60 inches wide, so it's a little unusual and I'm having a problem finding replacements for the two glass pieces that broke when the metal hallides we put directly onto the glass (they are now suspended a fair distance off the tank.) I have, however, found a local acrylic dealer that sells acrylic scrap for a buck a pound, which is going to be quite a bit cheaper than getting custom glass cut. So... thoughts? Anyone?

No to plastic covers for reasons mentioned above.
If you really need a top to stop jumpers (only reason I can think of needing a top, actually) you can probably find a local glass shop to custom cut you some glass cheaply. Clear covers like glass and plastic trap heat, though. I'd go with some other options if you can.

Interesting, though I am not sure about have aluminum exposed to the saltwater. I saw what salt air did to my boats aluminum railing and that made me switch to stainless steel. any problems with corrosion or aluminum "salt" forming?
