"Water Quality Alert For Broward Beaches!
If you are planning on surfing or recreating on Broward Beaches this week , you may consider taking the following precautions.
Consider:
It is probably wise to wear earplugs and avoid swallowing ocean water.
Shower off with soap and water, as soon as possible after surfing in questionable waters.
If an illness does occur and appears to be related to surfing, report it to the Surfrider Foundation.
Support ecological-minded businesses and organizations.
Get involved with Surfrider, and other environmental groups working to create long-term solutions.
The coastal beach water samples collected by the county health departments are analyzed for enterococci and fecal coliform bacteria. High concentrations of these bacteria may indicate the presence of microorganisms that could cause disease, infections, or rashes.
"A lot of water sampling is done once a week, but there usually is a one- to four-day delay between the time a sample is taken and testing results are known,"

There is also an elevated risk of sewage entering coastal waters. Contact with beach water is not recommended until after 72 hours after the end of the last rain event

I'm a newbie but I believe that ocean water has too many stuff in that you can't test for with the usual test kits we buy.
I live on an island 500 meters from the sea. You can walk down the beach and see some wavy lines on the sand. Those are tar and other oils from boats that get washed up on the shore. If I had a boat maybe I would go a 2-5 kilometres in the sea, but still there are huge transport boats going around and they also pollute. Plus the cost of gas to go 3-5 kilometres to get 4-5 buckets of water isn't worth it.
If you consider the time and gas you spend, you pretty much have the same thing with commercial salts and you'll spend less of your free time for it.

I am for getting it from the sea. Ofcourse test it first. But one thing to consider is that you do not have your tank up and running and established. It will probally speed up your cycle. It could add things you don't want that is a give in. If it was me I would trying you don't have anything to lose now. When you cycle get a single fish and see how it does. We can all speculate but no one can be sure goodluck
Personally if this was me I would do the following.
Use the sea water only in a test tank.
So if you have a spare then you are in luck.
Next go ahead and fill it up and let it sit for 4 hours and return.
Has anything floated to the top? oil skim? if the top of the water has that rainbow effect then that is oil you are looking at.

Good news for me as I was just looking at our local newspaper website and they had a story about out Ocean water. Makes me feel better, I copied a portion of the article
