Added Bonus ???

[Come Monday]

I got an order in on Tuesday, which included some green spotted mushrooms. I acclimated everything, got it set in the tank. Wednesday, after everything had some time to adjust, I noticed that the "Rock" which had the mushrooms on it, appeared to be opening and closing, and I thought back to the days of the magic mushrooms, all kidding aside, this thing was really opening. I can barely see inside of it, but from what I can see, it appears to be black, white and yellow. For $30, I think I might have scored something here. What do you think?

Its some sort of bi-valve.

So it will likely clean your water for ya! That's pretty neat. I've had a few things come in on wild colonies I've bought, but I never saw them opening and closing.

That's crazy you got a rock that the bi-valve on it is still alive! Cool stuff...

Not all that rare, I have one on a piece of that Carribean rock from the critter! It's kinda cool as It opens wide during the day and you can see the clam Inside. Thought about Clams on a 1/2 shell, YUM YUM

I have actually found a few live bi-valves by busting open rocks to make them into different shapes. I found one before the swap dead center in the middle of a rock when i busted it open. I had no idea that they could live that long after the rock grew around them. The rock as a whole was 5" x 6" and the bi-valve is about 2" x 3" and it is purple/black. Pretty neat what you can find in your tank.

That is a cool looking rock/bi-valve by the way.

I got a rock with one on it as well. It is still doing great. Only problem with them is they limit your scaping a bit since you need to insure it is clear to open. Other than that, it is just another great, natural cleaner!

I don't think that all of them are old enough for the rock to have formed around them, I believe that they bore into the rock. (http://images.google.com/imgres?img...es?q=clam+in+rock&hl=en&sa=G&gbv=2&tbs=isch:1)

Have you guys seen picture of tidal flats with numerous clams (presumably) bored into the rock and only the top flesh part is exposed? It's pretty wild seeing hundreds of clams like this. I'll try to find some pictures, if you are interested.
