Added Melafix to main DT... New SW QT or DT water???

Hi there!

I lost a purple firefish about a month ago, he seemed to have severe fin rot. Nothing happened since and now my mated pair of clownfirsh have the same thing happening but also seem to have ich and one has popeye. I've started dosing prodibio 6 weeks ago (startup sequence only) corals haven't bleached, parameters were fine until 2 days ago and suddenly there's a huge ammonia spike but I can't see anything that might have caused it. I don't have a QT tank so I dosed Melafix last night but reading here it's a waste of time and should QT all the fish an start hyposalinity for 6 weeks to stop the ich cycle. Can I do this with a brand new completely clean QT? It would be a 25gal eclipse because that's all I have on hand.

Thank you!

sounds like you should stop dosing prodibio and do some water changing to get your water quality under control... once your water parameters are fixed, your fish should heal right up

If you plan on doing hypo salinity... you should just do hypo salinity and no other treatment as this is a harsh enough treatment as it is

Yes, the new tank will work, but you will have to keep it very clean. I syphon out any poop or leftover food the SECOND I see it, making water changes every time. I don't know what to medicate with, I've never had to deal with it either thank god, but that's all I could say about the QT tank. Watch very closely for any hint of a spike.
