Adding a Sargassum Trigger with a Bluethroat Trigger. Anyone know if this is possible to do or have any experiences they care to share?

I had a pair of blue throats, asargassum and a Niger in a 400gal. They did well except the Niger who was a bully. The blue throats and sargassum were very docile.

Can you please be more detailed Eric?

Which fish did you have in the tank first and which one was added after or were they all added at the same time? How long were they together? What were their sizes? You said you had. What happened to them?

I had both together for a long time in a 55 then to a 90.No problems.the sargassium was about half the size of the bluethroat. You will be fine. The sargassiums look close to a female bluethroat.

If your tank is big enough, then they will likely be fine. I had crosshatch, bluethroat and sargassum in the same tank and they couldn't even care that they other fish were in there.

I started w/ a 4" niger. He was calm and well behaved. 3-4 months later, I added a 4-5" sargassum. A little aggression initially but nothing severe. 2-3 months later, I found an "African" niger. He had a lot of red in his body and was prob. 6-7". Finally, I added a blue throat. After about 6 months with no apparent problems, the blue throat croaked. Everyone had been eating but the larger niger did have a habit of chasing the others occ. I removed the smaller niger and traded him. I tried many times to catch the large niger but as soon as he saw the net, he would scram. I added a pair of blue throats and they seemed to do fine for about 3 weeks. Female died, then the male. The final straw was my beautiful sargessum croaked. I caught the niger one eve. He parked in a crevice at night and w/ the lights off, I simply grabbed him with heavy pick-ups/tweezers and pulled him out. I never saw the niger biting or any signs of damage on the other triggers but I dont know what else to blame their demise on. I'm now triggerless and miss them. I may try again one day but no nigers for me.

Kind of random, but why remove the Niger if all the other triggers were gone anyway?

Possibly random, 'cept I couldn't shake the fact that all my triggers met untimely deaths while the Niger flourished. I removed the Niger because I was ****ed off.

I had a different experience with 2 bluethroats in my 180 DT. Have had 2 males for over a year. They were sold to my wife as a pair by my LFS (she was buying me a gift). The larger one is 6-7'' and the smaller one was 2-3" but has probably grown to over 3-4". The larger male may have been a little extra aggressive for this species since he ate a watchman goby at one point a few months ago. Anyways, over the past few weeks they have started fighting frequently. I will have to get rid of one of them. So IMO be careful and watch the size differential in having 2 of the same genus in your smaller tank.
