Adding a sump.

I think you might take alook here www.melevsreef.com lots of good sumo ideas there. You most likely will not use 30 gallons. Leave your self plenty of reserve space for any possible mishaps.

To directly answer your question. Yes you can just add 30 gals of fresh saltwater to the sump. Just make sure that you it is the same temp and salinity as the DT. What are you using the sump for????

NO! Do not add freash water you are not topping off your tank you are adding to the total volume so it must be the same salinity has the tank. You where wise to ask or you would of turn your small part of the ocean into a brackish water cemetary of every thing in the main tank. Good luck, and if you need help always ask

well i am getting a new tank and i was going to put my old one to use. So it will be more a sump/fuge.

Noone said that he was going to add fresh water. He posted FRESH SALTWATER. I read that as a new mix of saltwater which is absolutely fine.

Yes it is fine. It will actually be very good for the system you will add a large volume of water so your readings will be better...

ok thanks. I don't know if i need to start a new thread or if i can continue on this one. But I am switching my sand bed out for white cause i dont like the black after it has been up for a while. But i was thinking of putting it in the fuge and have a dsb in there. Would this work out and if it did should i rise the sand out first? Not to worried about it not being live anymore it will reseed in time.

if it is still in the DT and you just plan to move it into the sump/fuge then just move it dont rinse it. But make sure that the system is running already then move it.
