No, but often when leathers, etc. close up they will slough off some nasty sort of slime that can be an irritant to other corals in the tank. The carbon helps to neutralize this.

IMO, the carbon might really help, for exactly the reason stated by gillianandjoe.
As far as using tapwater & conditioner goes, whether or not it will work depends largely on where you live. The chemistry of tapwater varies A LOT from place to place, but generally it's not fit for use in a reef -- again, there are definitely exceptions. Where I live, the water typically has a fair amount of calcium in it, but it comes out of the tap with Nitrates of 20. :eek1:

i tried to turn my yellow leather to the light and now i know for sure that it's hidding from light. why?
also, do i have to add anything to the water (like iodine, etc)??
i'm only adding PhytoPlex every other day, and that is it.
p.s. all 3 corals are still shrank.

Those carbon pads would work OK if you have a SKILTER filter (that's what they're made for)
What I had in mind was some loose carbon like the brands on this page which you can put in a media bag or filter pouch and sit it in your filter or sump.
In case you've never used carbon before, you should know that you need to rinse it in fresh water before using it to remove excess black dust. It is very effective at removing impurities/toxins from water.

YOUR TAP WATER PROBABLY HAS COPPER IN IT WHICH WILL MOST DEFINITELY MAKE YOUR CORALS DIE........ONLY USE RO/DI OR FILTERED FRESHWATER......
