Adding LR in rear chambers?

In the JBJ 12g nano cube DX, there are 3 rear chambers for filtration. Can I take out the sponges and bioball and add live rock in the chambers for more filtration? also, can I create a refugium in one of the chambers? if so, how?

LR in rear chambers: yes, it's pretty common, I did it too, only it may trap debris at the bottom - so the chamber's bottom has to be cleaned time from time. Filter floss on the top of LR helps.

Illustrated tutorial for making refugium in one of the middle chambers is here

You can but the area is so small its questionable if its even worth it for a tank that small.

I am curious why you would say the area is so small that it would not be worth it in a tank that small. Since the tank is so small, you would not need as large of a "refugium" as you would in a larger tank. I would estimate that at any time 20% of the water is in the rear chambers. If you put some rubble in one chamber and cheato in another, percentage wise, you have a pretty large sump/fuge. Perhaps I am overlooking something?

You might want to try Siporax media. They are much better at housing the critters for biofiltration than live rock is. I use 1L in my 2.5 gallon pico.

I have Tonga rubble in my hang on power filter. There is so much life in there when it's time to change media bags it's silly.
