Adding new sand. Do I...?

Guys I want to add additional sand which is more coarse. Eventually I want to add some jaw fish and also I want my sandbed prestine again. Do I place the new sand on top of the old or do I siphon the old out and replace it with the new? I do know to do sections at a time. Thanks for the replies.

I am not sure if I did this the right way or not, but it worked and all my fish and livestock survived. I have the coarse sand on the bottom of my tank and I wanted to add some finer stuff. I added several cups of the sand per day (to avoid any fluctuation in my ammonia). It looked great but the finer sand eventually worked it's way to the bottom of the tank and the coarse sand was again on top. My wrasses dig holes for themselves under the rocks to sleep in at night so I guess it does not matter to them what the texture is. Good luck.

If you suck it out when doing water changes you should be ok. You may release some nasty stuff when you do it so be careful. As for putting sand back in make sure it is super clean otherwise you'll a white out for a day or two.

Would it hurt anything if I took out the top layer of sand that is dirty and put the new sand on top? Not necessairly taking out all of the old sand.

As long as you get most of the stuff thats in the sand it should be fine. If you let alot of that junk get out your more than likely going to have problems.

Do you mean if it gets in my water colum? SO I may be better off putting the sand on top of my old sand huh?
