adding ponies

Hi Lance,
This would be an easier question if we knew what species.

Normally this would be fine if we are talking about the same species, for example, the new ones are just younger than the existing ones and would not be fully grown yet.

There are exceptions where this would not be appropriate.

Such as adding H zosterae with a large species.

as of now i have three female reidi in the tank and am looking at getting a pair of the erectus species

i am sticking to the larger species because i would rather stay away from having to hatch the brine all the time for the dwarf species so all should be around the same size

the species we are intrested in are the following: h. kuda,h. reidi,h. erectus and the H. barbouri

Our experts will chime in and I respect their opinions. In my experience, I have kept erectus and reidi in the same tank with success, but the caveat is they all came from the same breeder... so the chance for pathogens to be introduced was lessened.
I would strongly recommend that you buy truly "farmed" seahorses. If you introduce wild caught of one breed into your tank, you may be courting disaster.

JMHO.

thanks for the info and i definately plan to only purchase captive bred seahorses and also pipefish so i have a better chance with them eating the frozen mysis instead of having to feed the live foods

Hi Lance,

There are no CB pipefish available in the US, so that plan will never materialize unfortunately. As far as mixing species, I am unfortunately one of the many that had disastereous results mixing species (ie: they all perished). Happened on more than one occassion. For this reason, I now keep only species only tanks and never mix species.
