adding sand to a running tank

I am getting another 40lb bag of Aragonite sand (the stuff that already has a bit of water in the bag) and want to know if this with start another cycle like adding uncured LR would?

Also, does any one have any good suggestions on how to add sand to an existing tank without completely clouding the water?

Thanks

I wouldn't do it, I will NEVER add any form of substrate or LR in a tank that has live fish in it. I added 3 pieces of what i thought was cured LR and it killed off all of my prized fishes.

Your talking about the store bought stuff right? If so, I would absolutely put it in. I have many, many times over the years. you dont have to worry about a cycle providing your tank is established already and have a good amont of LR aleady. I use a piece of PVC pipe. Cut to length and duct tape a funnel to one end. place pipe in tank and your good to go. you should experience little to no sand storm as it is already wet.

I believe hes talking about the stuff in the bag that could have been sitting around for 5+ years for all we know, I have a feeling you should cycle that in a small 10g tank or something first.

thats why we dont use wet sand like that...who knows how long its been there or even if its worth the extra money...what if all the live stuff in it is dead?
especially since really no one around here messes with saltwater. i doubt they restock on such things that no one really wants to buy in these stores

Thanks for the input.

luntiz & HappySkittles: I see where you are coming from, forgot to mention that I just had my LFS order this bag for me so it should be fairly new.

patsfan1130 & A.VOID: Thanks for the funnel/tube idea, I hope it will keep the sandstorm down a little at least.

Ziploc bag with a hole cut in one of the corners works wonders. Just like putting icing on a cake. :) No sand storm.

it will depend on tank size.. if its a 3 gal pio.. dont throw in 20lbs of sand.. if its a 10000g tank then its a drop in the bucket..
