Adding sand to an existing reef tank

I plan on re-aquascaping my 210 gal reef tank with less rocks and more open space.

As part of this new aquascape, I plan on adding sand to the display tank. Currently, there is only 3 inches of fine sand in the bag and in the front it is at most 1 inch or nothing (fine sand was blown around by the powerheads). However, I am a little concerned I might screw up the water and/or existing sandbed by doing so.

Any ideas or recommendations?

When I upgraded last, I arranged the rock on a bare bottom and added new sand later. I was able to do this without any clouding of the water. Go to the automotive department of a department store (Walmart) and get one of those long necked funnels that are used for oil changes. Attach a length of vinyl hose to it to equal the distance to the bottom of your tank. After rinsing your new sand until the water runs clear, soak it for a day or two in new saltwater so it doesn't upset the salinity in your tank and pour or spoon wet sand into the funnel. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to direct the sand exactly where you want it. It worked great for me, although I did it a little at a time for several days.

You can also just sink a zip lock bag full of sand to the bottom of the tank and then pour it out. Use your hands to kind of contour it the way you want. Like mentioned above though, try doing a little at a time each day. You don't want to smother your existing sandbed.

WOW great idea! I have added sand many times and always have to deal with some cloudiness. Doesnt hurt anything from what I have seen but, Ill do what I can to aviod a messy tank.
